Squealing Alternator?

Recommended Posts

nesman

hi, got a gti6 lump in my 309. I got shut of the a/c and run a rallye aux belt. Ive developed a horrible squeal which has killed my first alternator and im now on my second and the squeal has come bk again. Its been like it a few days and now its completely stopped charging my battery. Im a little stressed and tierd as ive just had my finger taken around the pas pulley and im ready to cry. Have i got the belt too tight in the first place. the pulley on the alternator is redhot and so it the belt and pas pulley, i realise that there gunna be warm but not this hot. Please help as sick of bumping car. thanks

Were they new alternators? any chance both could be seized?

when i fit belts i try to have the belt so i can twist it at least half but not all the way round on itself.

do you use a pulley wheel with this setup? i havnt seen one like yours, this could be squeeling, i hope it is and not your alt!

if it is turning and not charging then i would say your alt is already shot.

does everything line up ok? i.e has the mounting bent and causes run out on the pulley, prematurely wearing out the altinator inners because it is being pulled on the p1ss...

The first alternator came with the engine 36k and the other came off my 8v which worked fine and has been dry stored since conversion. i only fitted that 2 week ago and only got car on the road in November. :(

if they are shot can they be repaired as my mate rewires motors. Im hoping that my fabrication bracket is making the 'alt' pull on the p1ss.

from what you describe it certainly sounds like it is running on the piss causing the alternator to wear.

yes alternators can and are reconditioned, you say your mate rewinds motors but is he able to check/change diodes etc in alternators and then bench test them to check output?
