Great Pug Day, Not So Great At Hometime!

Recommended Posts

Well after a great day getting the 205 to a stage of nearly being able to run it I jumped in the "donkey" to go home, turned the key and it turned over but wouldn't start.

Donkey is a Mk4 Golf GTTDI 2001. In my 8 months of ownership it hasn't once let me down. :P

When I turn the ignition on there is not the usual glow plug light, and then the engine just turns over but won't fire up.

I've done a bit of research and it seems that there is a relay, 109, which is a common fault and failure of the relay is usually signified by the lack of glow plug light.

I'll get another in the morning and try it, but have any of you guys had any similar non starting issues with a Mk 4 Golf?

Any other ideas on diagnosis would be welcome in case the 109 doesn't turn out to be the issue.

Cheers

If you havent already, try the fuse for the fuel pump too.

To be honest I haven't tried much other than a bit of internet detective work, by the time I'd finished on the 205 it was pitch black and that horizontal rain we get in Wales had started again.

I pushed the car into the yard and drove the Landy home.

I'll take a proper look in the morning.

Cheers Woodsy,

Initially there was no fuel pump sound, but there was no glowplug light either, which usually indicates that relay 109 is faulty.

I have changed that and all seems well, so fingers crossed!

Bad times :)

I did the front wheel bearings and the back beam bushes on the golf today, thinking that it might enjoy the attention and behave for a while.

No dice, went to move it out of the shed and hey presto...nothing.

Same problem.

I've loaded it up onto my trailer and will be off to the "local" VW specialist in the morning who I have used before and found to be good.

To cap it all the Landy had a flat battery, my house build has run into more issues even before it goes to planning, and my dog was killed by the vet a year ago today.

Still, at least I've got my health, my lovely wife and my Jack Russell!
