Polishing 1.6 Peperpot Centre Areas

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I want a good set of 14" Speedlines for my 1.6 project. I have a set to refurb but want the centre areas polished OE style.

Can this be done by hand? I don't mind a bit of elbow grease.

Would sanding by hand then using metal polish give good results?

I had bit of play this morning and did not get as far as metal polish but felt the results were not great, although I admit I did not spend hours on it.

I am I doing something wrong or expecting too much?

Many thanks

Jonny

The centres would have originally been diamond cut, this gives the concentric circles appearance.

As for polishing them yourself, you probably need to start with abrasive paper, quite fine say 1200 grit, then work up to 1500. After that to get a decent polished finish you will need some polishing compound and a mop to fit an electric drill or similar. Doing it by hand you could possibly eventually get there, but you will be there literally for ever doing it.

Thanks Tom. I am struggling to work out the best way to deal with the centres.

Powder coaters screw their faces up when I ask about polished centres and of I got them done afterwards the edges would chip or flake I suspect.

What sort of company should I be looking for that might diamond cut the centres after the rest of the wheels have been refurbished and sprayed?

Alternativly, would a kit like this be suitable or is it too Mickey Mouse?

It's all in the sanding :(

You can do it all by hand but it is better with some sort of mop.

A place like Lepsons will diamond cut. They paint the entire wheel then diamond cut the required areas then laquer the whole lot.

Just diamond cutting will be approx £35 per wheel.
