Bad Paint?

Recommended Posts

mhyphenl

Please bare in mind that i have no experience with paints. I bought a can of Matt Black Hammerite spray paint with a view to doing the bits of suspension I can't get powder coated. I shook the thing for ever but when I sprayed the first bit, (wishbones) the paint seems to be mostly solvent and hardly any pigment, really watery! Is this how spray hemmerite is or have I got a bad can?? Is there anything better to use?? I used this as I didn't seem to need to worry about rust treatment!

Hammerite is crap.

Try putting the can on a radiator for 10 mins first, then shake again for a minute or so.

If you holding the can upside down or at a steep angle this can happen also.

It doesn't treat rust it just covers it. The rust will continue to grow underneath.

I used hammerite spray in the past and it was so thin, even the thinnest coat ended up with runs.

As above.

If you want a decent rust resistant finish to parts like wishbones, get a can of etch primer, etch prime them first, then overcoat with brush on black engine enamel. Will give a reasonably good finish to a cast/forged part.

You could treat the rust with crust it turns blue black, than paint it.

Yes, best to sand down all the paint and rust so its all clean. Getting paint remover will help and a drill wire brush to get the rust of then panel wipe it clean then use the etch primer and paint with the engine block paint any colour you want. Good painting is all down to good prep.
