Adjusting Handbrake Cables

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

I've replaced the handbrake cables recently, whilst tightening them up I've done what all the past threads have told me...

Fit and hook up

Manually adjust auto-adjusters, as they're not working, so the shoes just about 'bite'

Tighten handbrake but so is about 5-6 clicks.

Now, I've set the adjusters so I can just about hear/feel them rubbing and when the handbrake is then pulled to about 7 clicks, I can still turn the wheels by hand (Okay, a lot of force is needed but still).

I've fitted, what I think to be the right cables to the right sides, but the o/s is much easier to spin than the n/s.

I can't really adjust the auto-adjusters any more otherwise they will be binding on the drums, likewise with the nut on the handbrake.

The drums have got a bit of surface rust - shall I tighten the adjusters more than I have then, and hope the 'bed in' okay?

Thanks,

Ross.

after clicking adjusters up did you give drums a tap to settle shoes?

with mine i used a torch to adjust up fully so drum was solid then went back 2 clicks so they just rubbed, then applied handbrake 4 clicks and done adjuster up until it took out the cable slack and nut touched the metal bracket.

got a nice handbrake hat holds now on 4-5 clicks

Thanks Smithy - I didn't pull the handbrake up before adjusting - did like you said adjusted them right up then back a bit, 4 clicks and now seems perfect, thanks! B)
