Hose Help, Confusion Reigns On Friday Afternoon!

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

Another probably terrible question, I have searched but none of the pictures I found helped an awful lot!

Ok, I've cracked on with the engine build this week and have now got the engine in the car and done a bit of wiring and some plumbing of hoses and I'm quite pleased with my progress.

I'm now confused as I'm left with a whole heap of hoses which have nowhere to go.

Without the carbs it is easier to see whats going on.

There are two pipes (breathers?) which come out of the housing under the dizzy, one of which went into the old injection manifold, and one which I think went into either the afm or throttle body.

What do I do with them? If they are breathers can they be led to the filler tower cap...aaarrgghhh, I'm so nearly there with it all but can't for the life of me work out what to do with the hoses!

In the above picture there is also a water hose? that runs from just above and to the left of the outlet for the rad top hose, from memory this went to the throttle body, but I can't work out where it should go.

If anyone could draw me a picture or send me a photo or two of their setup I would be forever indebted to you and if you ever came to Abersoch I'd even buy you beers.

Please help, I really want to hear this motor running on carbs!!

if i remember correctly, there are 2 coolant pipes going to the throttle body, one in and one out.

i guess this should come from around the dizzy area? where that stupid pipe is that bulges. i think it goes to a cold start / warm idle thing.

someone will know for sure. im just throwing ideas. i havnt looked at a gti engine for about 5 years.

It would be easier if you were to mark the hoses in question on your pics, then it could be solved in no time.

The big one with a 90 degres bend at the end which is in the centre of the pic (by the blue one) is from the SAD-you don\\\'t need that one any more. The one that went from the water temperature sensor housing to the throtle body you can connect straight to the coolant reservoir.

remove the yellow ones together with the SAD, connect the green one to the coolant reservoir. I\\\'m not 100% sure about the green one because the pic isn\\\'t clear, but the hose in question goes from the water temperature sensor housing (the housing that caries the dizzy) to the throtlle body, then via another to the coolant reservoir. Just lose one and connect the other directly from the water temperature sensor housing to the coolant reservoir.

Cheers Stefan, thats great, so I can just unbolt the sad and do away with hoses 1 and 2 and hose three just goes straight onto the top of the coolant tank.

Now the only hoses I need to find a home for are the two in the picture below.

I've looked at various pictures of conversions and some have the hoses blanked off and not doing anything, whats the best solution?

Cheers again for the help!

I wouldn't blank it off(close it at the end) because of excess pressure in the sump. You could blank-off one of the 2 hoses(the thinner one) and use one of those little filter thingies at the other end (on the other end of the cap),or lead one hose into some kind of a tank that also has means of air escaping out of it.

A thing to keep in mind is that oil can crop up from that cap and mess up your engine bay, so any solution that doesen't involve closing the oil cap up, but also doesen't alow the oil to squirt around, is fine by me.

I've come up with what I think is a neat solution for the oil filler cap hoses.

The picture says it all really.

Any comments for and against please let me know!

That's it, only I'd use one pipe from the cap, like here:
