Where On Gearbox Is Gearbox Code?

This search doesn't seem to reveal the answer:

So where exactly is the gearbox code on BE1s? I was hoping to determine whether mine is a 1.9 or 1.6 as it certainly feels quite short, but do not have any record of it vein changed.

I know on the MA boxes it's on the side, on a flat part of the box.

Maybe the surface of mine is so too blemished to decipher...

Its a sticker on the older gearboxes, so more than likely not there any longer, they are near the diff casing on a flat machined part of the casing.

AFAIK you have to look at the numbers stamped on the crown wheel to be 100%

That will only tell you the final drive ratio but should give you a decent idea of which box it is,

Thanks. Yeah I think the sticker must have come off at some point in the last 22 years!

Will have a look when it's comes to clutch time.

Yes but that's not what the op was asking about imo, more the rpm / speed in gears between the 1.6 & 1.9 box.

Correct, Graham.

I know it's a BE1 but the ratios feel decidedly short. But this is my first 205 so I don't have a reference point.

Another way of telling might be if I tell you my rpm in fifth at, say, 50mph. Would that be enough info to determine whether it's a 1.6 or 1.9 box?

If you're running standard sized tyres yes, 1.6 is 18.9mph / 1000rpm in fifth & 1.9 is 20.9 iirc.

Am I right in saying the tyre size wouldn't affect the gauge readings, only the actual speed?

Kinda, a larger overall tyre & wheel size will alter the speedo reading & in turn the rpm will differ slightly but not by a miassive amount on either count unless you have changed the ratio massively.
