Smaller Engine Higher Power. Insurance Difference?

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

If i was to swap my 1.4 xs engine 85bhp-ish

for a

1.3 phase1 106 rallye engine 100bhp ish

am i going to be looking at a massive hike in insurance because a) its a modification b)its more powerful?

or would it level out because the engine is smaller?

obviously i need to ask the insurance company to be sure, but i cant be arsed to spend six hours on the phone to find itll cost me £73k per hour, for an idea that is merely a hatchling

cheers

john

Any modification usually involves a price hike whether it makes your car slower, safer etc.

Have a look at what insurance grp the ralley is and the xs that will give you some idea of what will happen.

When I've phoned up about insuring mi16 converted cars, they just want to know the BHP increase. Never really been interested in what car it came from.

I'm surprised by that, most specialists will (loosely) base the quoation on which car the donor engine came from.

In answer to the OP's question, the only way to find out is to speak to some insurers who cover engine converted cars.,

From my experience of insurance and engine sizes it will stay the same or only go up a little. It costs me about 50% more to insure myself on a heavy, 60hp 1.8 205 diesel than it was to insure myself on the 85hp XS which goes like shi*t!

The system they work on is utterly insane and makes no sense.
