Anyone used something like this? Any use?

Would pay for itself fairly quickly if it works.

You would have to bolt them down pretty well. Check what diameter wheel it will work on (though the calcs say up to 18" wheels). I would say you still need to get them balanced though so only really useful for getting tyres off as opposed to ready to run. You would stand more chance of scuffing alloys with these than the proper pneumatic ones.

I made my own, much beefier than the ones you can buy, but only really because thats what I had laying around, I made mine with a peugeot hub so I can bolt wheels on that have no centre hole, with another hub that bolts on top (with spacers so it's not against the rim), with a rod sticking out to lever against.

Low profile tyres take a fair bit of work to get on/off and you'll want nylon ends for the bar so you don't mark alloys.

I didn't ballance the wheels after fitting tyres and I've had no problems, but my dad has a manual ballancer, like a spirit level type affair, he swears by it, had it for years and it's proved to be accurate with the various things he's ballanced with it, including a prop from a microlite!

i have a seally manual one.

the first thing you will need to do is weld a thicker bar to the breaker as it will bend, the 2nd thing is bolting it down the first thing i tried was bolting it to the concrete floor.after doing 2 tyres it pulled out of the concrete[bolted down with raw bolts].i have now bolted it to some metal plate then sunk that into some new concrete,so far so good.

the other thing is you need plenty of space to walk round with a bar.

edit

oh yes the standard bar isnt very good either

The best levers I've used were old truck tyre levers, round section in the middle not the crappy flat bar type.

Never used a machine so far, but have changed plenty of 7.5t and 44t tyres, as well as some smaller 4x4 and car tyres, wouldn't choose to do any alloys though unless they had a decent chunky lip and crap paintwork
