Gti 6? Or Mi16?

Recommended Posts

RICH530I

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are, I was always planning on putting A mi16 in my 205 but today I have been offered a local gti 6 engine! Just wondering what you guys consider to be the best motor? What would you consider to be A good price for A gti 6 engine complete with everything ready to pop in bar a manifold?

Many thanks in advance for the help.

Richard.

a lot of people prefere the 1.9 mi16 engine bacuse it was the 'original' transplant engine, and tendt to suit the characteristics of the car.

but you could probarbly get a gti6 engine from a running car for less money, and you know it runs e.t.c

plenty fast enough standard for the roads in my opinion

My engine (gti6) was a gamble as it was out of the car. Paid £250.

Actual cost for conversion (did it myself) came to just under £1200.

I had planned for approx £600 but decided to do it properly. ie clutch / belts / water pump / mounts / hose kit. etc etc.

My point being there are normally loads of little parts you need that bump up the cost.

Make sure you get EVERYTHING you need.

Cant tell you much about the engine as ive not driven it in anger yet.

There is a massive recent thread (including poll) to give you that info for comparison. Have a search.

I have a gti6 on throttle bodies & a mi16 on twin 45s, speed wise i dont think theres that much difference, there both brilliant.

The gti6 engine does feel more modern than the mi16 but it is heavier and makes the car more understeery so you would need to uprate suspension, well i did anyway.

gti6 engines are know for snapping cambelts, from what ive heard people replace these around every 35-40k to be safe

mi16 engines have oil surge problems on hard cornering i suppose a baffled sump fixes that

mi16 engines are from that era of car, but for me I wouldnt change my gti6 for an mi16.

its is an ongoing discussion about the mi16 oil surge problem, and if it does happen it is mostly with the people on slicks on track, with huge cornering forces.

some people think it is to do with the head, and others with the sump baffles, or both, or just a poorly built engine.

gti6 is only 20 or so kilos heavyer isnt it?

MI16 is more revvy, better towards the redline in my opinion...much like the 1.6. The gti6 is more torquey, better for road driving I guess you could argue.

GTI6 is heavier as mentioned.

GTI6 certainly doesnt have anything like as good throttle response as the older engines, but the management is much better and it's smoother to drive.

I'm fitting a gti6 engine because as much as I love the MI16, I reckon to get the best out of them nowadays you need to fit standalone management. The GTI6 is fit and forget, basically.

Horses for courses!!!
