How Worried Should I Be?

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

got the car out today for a run as its been off the road for a month.

drove about for ten mins or so and went home and thought i would check the coolant.

this is what greeted me

post-7077-1296487403_thumb.jpg

it has the apperance of oil and smells like oil. not really mayo just looks like pure oil running through the coolant system.

i have plenty of oil (maybe too much as its still on the max level on the dipstick)

the head gasket was only done a few hundered miles ago along with new bolts belt etc. so surely not that?

in my heart it know it is though....glum :o

btw it doesnt overheat and hasnt overheated since being done

Is it old stuff from the previous head gasket failure?

Dump it, flush it out and try again. May need a couple of flushes.

Are you using the oil/water heat exchanger?

Could well be left over from last time, did you thorougly clean all the water ways and pipes? As Cam said, may need a few flushes. I doubt it will ever go back to clear/blue again though!

this is the most likely explanation, had it on my engine too.

swapped the heat exchanger for another known good unit, flushed and filled with fresh coolant and it's been fine since :o

PM Miles, I think he said he has some spare.

some good new guys thanks :o

i had completely forgot about the heat exchanger.

i'll give it a flush and remove the tank and rinse it out and see if it comes back, if not i'll try another exchanger.

the head gasket never went, i just removed the head and checked it all over before i put the engine in the car . all the faces etc were in really good condition thats why i didnt understand why/if it had failed.

I would pop to a motorfactor and get one of those blue plastic hose joiners and bypass the heat exchanger temporarily.

to have that amount of oil in cooling system it can only really be the exchanger.

i have had oil in water in a previous car and never really had much success with the flushing solutions that you can buy,i ended up draining down and running hose through to remove as much as poss and then crumbled a dishwasher tablet in filled with water and ran it around block a few times so it is nice and hot then drained and repeated process.after a couple of flushes it was spotless in cooling system.

Yes it will run fine, I never use them anyway as they are more of a pain as the oil gets too hot

Are you sure you haven't put oil in instead of coolant? :o

i might just do away with it then, just a case of removing the whole assembly and screwing the filter straight to the block i take it?

You need to get the threaded section from a block without a heat exchanger.

If the threaded section is the same as on tu blocks then I should have one in the garage.

I believe it is the same on TU's but don't quote me on it. Anyway, i have just removed the heat exchanger on an Mi16, and the part number for the threaded section you need is 1103.54 and its £1.85 from your local peugeot/citroen stealer....rarely in stock though!
