Garage/workshop/lockup

Advice/suggestions/help wanted

My 205 is stored at my mothers in a barn amongst number of her cars/ my bothers cars and my sisters. I went to check up and turn the old girl over last week only to find a large dent in the driver’s wing and a deep scratch going from the dent up the door to the fuel cap.

Because of this and no one owning up to the damage (im sure my mum would be pissed if I scratched her rx8 or dented her saff cossie) I want to move the car closer to me.

At the moment at the end of my road there are a number of garages up for rent, I gave the agents a call and they want £80 per month and £150 deposit up front for one.

I also called the local council and they have some from £10 per week but the closest if 5 miles away (as the crow flies) they also said on the phone the garage can only be used for storage NOT as a workshop.

I had a noise round on the net and found a number of commercial lockups/garages/workshops within 5 mins walking distance from my place, the problem is that the cheapest is £300 per month, I don’t have that much to spend, if I did I word add the 300 to my 600 rent and get me a 4 bedroom house with a garage.

Does anyone have any options or suggestions that they could give me?

thanks

Bummer mate, 'spill' some paint stripper on whoevers car you think did it,I'm sure they will care then.

Don't listen to what th council say, I've done all my work in one with no trouble. It's just a little small and has no electric which is a major problem

Still the cheapest option though?

My brother rents one from the council for the price of a couple of drinks a week its a bargain. Many old people use their free bus passes and have no need for a garage you could offer to cut their lawn if you can keep it there that's what i did for a neighbour. Ask about in your street.

What are you plans for the car now damien? It wouldn't of stoped the dent but maybe it's worth putting a cover over it?

I rent a council garage. Yes, the rules say you can't use the council garage as a workshop.

Council people don't work weekends

I agree with the above, get a council garage or ask some old lady that has one spare etc.

They also say its not suppose to be used for storage but the garages near mine are nearly all used for storage and the workmen that went there to refit a door that broke said nothing, cause its still full of s*it.

Its the council inspectors that will do you for it and im sure they never check up, its probable an insurance safety thing or noise control ??

So if you aren't allowed to use a garage for storage or working on a car etc, then what is the point in a garage?...

I was in a similar position, i just rented a more expensive house with a garage and a drive way. Cheaper in the long run and you can keep an eye on things.

You need to be careful about using an old persons garage!

A friend of mine totally restored an old mini and a friend of his Grandads said it could be kept in her garage during the winter as he only used it as a summer car. Anyway a few months later the grandad was chatting with his friend, she said that someone had dumped a car without road tax in her garage and that she had reported it to the police and they were going through the process of getting it removed. I could have ended up crushed!!!

Warning- Old people can forget things!

What i meant was storing anything else other then a car, our council seems pretty petty with this rule but im sure most councils have the same sort of rule.

Maybe you could rent share a small workshop with electricity, if so put some adverts around your local newsagents etc ?

is the 300 pounds a month a big place?if so you could share with someone maybe or offer car storage.

at the moment you are very lucky having the place at your parents why not spend a few quid and section your part off? will be cheapest in the long run.

dont forget to look at security options on your new place.

the places i was looking at where these - http://www.vebra.com/property/1246/21892774 and http://www.vebra.com/property/1246/21665472

i wouldnt be using them for business use, just for storage for tools/ my cars and just to work on mine. i wouldnt mind paying something like £100 a month for that but £300 is just too much and all my "mates" own newish cars so dont like getting there hands dirty.

i want to get my car from my mothers asap just because i dont trust it there anymore with her having so much going on and so many people in and out , its the type of place where you could take your tools up there and the next day they would be gone and no one would know anything about it, im suprise no one has been pinching bits off it so far. oh and i did have a sheet and car cover on it but when i went up there it was off the car.

the problem with the council place is they said i would have to go on a list and as im privite let council tenents are more likey to get a garage over me (which is fair) also the lack of power and dragging my tools back and forth would start to bug me.

the garages at the end of my road would be the best bet but i cant see why they want so much for so little and with locals parking in front of them all the time (as its all onroad parking here) theres a high chance i wont be able to get in the garage.

on the bright side i could run a very long cable from the house to the garage for power (knowing my luck someone would fall over it and make a claim) and my current cctv does cover the front of the garages.

Check out Gumtree, I know the local council garages are advertised on ours for rent by those who rent them.

At least it gets the car moved.

If you have no elec , one way round the problem is for lighting a spotlight run of a car battery and for drilling a battery drill. :P :

this is what i have a set of 12v bulbs off a battery but tbh its pretty dull and doesnt last too long.

would be nice to be able to run a grinder or welder tho

if you wasnt so far away i would chip in for one of them garages mate as it would suit me to the ground.
