307 Hdi Won't Start But Turns Over

Recommended Posts

Well my 2003 307 HDI 90 had a little wobble tonight. Driving along, I heard a rattle from the near side, sort of like an ABS pump working noise, so I pulled in and stopped. The engine was still running so I turned it off. It wouldn't restart after that. It would turn over but not fire. It would fire briefly on some "easy start". There is fuel going to the little balloon so it isn't that and it is bled correctly. I removed the timing belt cover and that is still attached (phew!).

Thoughts lead me to crank sensor but I am wondering why I heard a rattle or maybe it was just the car starting to splutter as I stopped pretty quickly with the clutch in as I was only going 20mph in town.

I called the breakdown people out to see if it was a quick fix, but they just returned it home. They did try and start it for ages, but economy mode came on. They tried plugging it into the OBD connector, but it wouldn't read (maybe due to economy mode?). Any other thoughts?

Both parts 4 and 6 are speed sensors. Though I am 99% sure that part 6 is what I need and it is also shown in this link. Part 4 (6160 70) is £51 and part 6 (1920 EN) is only £12.22 before I get my PSOOC discount :P I so hope it is just that and the rattle was as the end came off and ground on the teeth of the flywheel and is hopefully lurking somewhere in the bottom of the bellhousing out of harms way (though it could indicate the cluch is breaking up!). fingers crossed.

I'm just wondering what the other speed sensor is for? Rev counter?

I cannot see the picture, but if there is an end of a sensor kicking about in the bottom of the bellhousing you need to retrieve it, as sooner or later it will get picked up by the flywheel and flung round to smash another sensor to pieces. Been there and done it years ago when changing the clutch on my 405 Mi16, mate who was helping me dropped a nut, looked about but could not find it, thought no more about it, finished job, drove car 300yds and it stopped dead. Yes you have guessed it, said nut was in the clutch housing and got flicked up and obliterated the crank sensor.

1920EN is the crank position sensor and goes into the top of the bellhousing, 616070 is the speedo drive and goes into the diff. The car should run without the latter, but would definetly not run without the former.

EDIT : I have also been ruined by not running a flywheel cover and somehow a small piece of metal ended up smashing the crank sensor. I still have it somewhere, and its not pretty to say the least.

Update. I whipped the crank sensor out and it looked ok with no bites out of it though a slight scuffed area on the face, but there was no resistance across it on a multimeter. Neither Peugeot or Citroen in Sheffield had one in stock today, so I took the lazy option and had it trailered off to my brothers to go and work his magic on it. I pay breakdown so I may as well use it and he was able to get one ordered and delivered for when the car arrived B) I was thinking about M@tts long running MG saga and I need the car back on the road asap or I will re-tax the skip.

It is frustrating that when modern cars go wrong you really need diagnostic stuff to be 100% sure or you can spend a fortune on sensors for no reason. If it was a 205, it would be simple spark and fuel check and work your way back to the duff component! I'm sure it is something simple, but if it is a high pressure fuel pump issue then it would have been way out of my league.

(I'd planned on giving it a good wash and a polish today too as the weather is nice but cold)

I realised after the recovery truck was on its way that I could have probably got one from GSF / ECP, but they would have been shut by the time I got there. Peugeot said order today for Wednesday delivery and they were a bespoke part that only they sold!
