And if you fancy reading a newspaper after replacing it, you'll find a selection at the local newsagents or supermarkets :D

I'm sure Welshpug will be along in a moment with the part number for it.

They're always on eBay. Sure, it'll be a few quid more expensive, but sometimes it's worth it when Pug parts departments just want to piss you about. Sorry, we can't trace it without your chassis number. Sorry, it's not in stock and we have to order it in, so you have to pay for it up front, but we won't take payment over the phone, so you have to come down here to order it, and then make another trip back to collect it, and then make another trip after that when we get the wrong part in. Sorry, you can only buy that part in a pack of 5, and we won't split it. Etc etc.

They can be utter twats a lot of the time :P

I understand your frustration but here is my small defence of the often useless parts 'advisors' (named for irony!)

Being a parts monkey isn't fun at the best of times, largely because people expect you to be able to locate obscure and random parts on old models from memory, the other day a customer got particularly irrate with me because i didnt know the part numbers for 1988 Citroen C25 van door hinges off the top of my head! I do take advance payment over the phone however, forcing people to come down is ridiculous; and you HAVE TO take advance payment because so many people just won't come back if you don't and you end up with loads of stock which PSA will not accept back (they are very selective and if they do accept it they still charge you massive handling charges even when the error was theirs; its surprising how many people dont come back to collect parts even when they have paid up front!) And requiring chassis numbers is just to try and make sure you do get exactly the part you are after, so as not to piss the customer off; however its often irrelevant on the older models because entering a chassis number into ServiceBox doesn't narrow it down like it does on the newer ones. You also have to remember that 99% of customers haven't a clue what part they really need, let alone the exact details of their car and will just ask something like "1.4 206, alternator, how much?" not realising that there are so many variants that its just impossible to say without a chassis number....or a very knowledgable customer. So when we come across an enthusiast who knows exactly what they want, their model, engine code etc. its kind of a surprise...one that i welcome!

Mininum quantity rates is the fault of PSA aswell, if someone wants a seal for a BX hydraulic fluid pipe and they only come in a bag of 10, is the parts dept supposed to take a loss just so you can have one? Whilst we have to pay for the other 9 so end up losing on the deal? I admit that most peugeot parts depts are filled with people who just have no clue and their lack of willingness to help is appalling or even just general car knowledge. The reason i ended up with this job is because when i was a customer i used to go behind the counter and look them up myself because the parts guys were so useless; then they offered me the post. So, that is my little rant about the trials and tribulations of being a parts monkey since i am at work with nothing to do!......anyone got a chassis number for me!? :D

Hugely off topic, but why not when you are wasting time and getting paid!

Sam, your defence of your job is like water off a duck's back to me. I'm not ignorant in respect of how the system works, nothing you have said above is new to me.

It doesn't change the fact that the system is against the customer, and creates bad service. I appreciate that those doing the job can only do so much to make the customer service experience better, and it's good that you (unlike so many other's) will take payment over the phone for instance. But over the years my experiences with a variety of Peugeot dealers has been below par, with the single notable exception of the very last one I went to quite some time ago in the far reaches of South London. The old boy there was an absolute star, going well beyond the call of duty to try and get me the little black plastic plugs that go in the front wheel arches before you insert the barbed clips on the arch trims. He actually could almost remember the part number for them, despite their relative obscurity within OUR community, let alone the wider Puegeot owning community.

I also understand why chassis numbers are requested. But I think that although it's entirely relavant it should not be a crutch to the job. I expect people to think outside of the box, and work with me, not against me. One of the dealers I used to go in East London had a young guy behind the counter who was completely bemused when I kept coming in to order stuff with just the part numbers. He asked me how I'd got them and I said "it's all on Servicebox". He looked at me blankly, and I trued to explain again, but he had no idea what Servicebox is. But at the end of the day, if I go in and want to order something, I accept that the risk of getting the wrong part lies with me and I know I can't get a refund on it (this isn't where my earlier comment about having to go back a third time comes from. I have actually ordered stuff going by the parts depts advice and ended up with the wrong part).

Anyway, I think if there's one thing we agree on, it's that the system is terribly flawed and the blame lies with PSA. The dealers obviously have to tow the line or lose money, but ultimately it's the customer who gets screwed. But it clearly creates a nice little niche market for eBay sellers B)

TOYBOY

They are £14.93+VAT from Peugeot. £17.92 in total, so not much difference Between Pug and E-bay.
