My Mi Coming Out Of Hibernation Will Not Start

Recommended Posts

adie205

After being far to busy at work i have finally got round to getting the pug ready for summer. Its a 205 mi16 on 16v management thats been stored in a container for the last 6 months. I am desperate to have it running by the end of Feb because its my 30th birthday.

Just checking my limited knowledge to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Went to start it the other day, fresh battery, lots of fuel and it will not fire. It turns over absolutely fine, water and oil absolutely fine. Whipped the spark plugs out and they were all flooded with fuel so it is getting fuel. Took the lead off the coil and turned it over and i can hear it sparking. My next plan is to clean all contacts, check all earths (as container is damp) and go from there but just to check, ive got a gut feeling, dodgy coil.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Adie

Earth the main lead from the coil and see if it's a good strong spark, if not, work back wards for

possible coil / ignition amp / crank sensor.

If you get stuck, I'm only 10 minutes away and don't mind having a good butchers.

have you checked the AFM plug has not come adrift, also ensure your ECU temp sensor is still plugged in!

Not meaning to be a tw@t but an Mi on 2 row management in good order will actually start and idle with both of these unplugged. The CTS will turn on the engine management light, and the Air flow meter will mean it will die if you try to rev it up as it can't sense any load.

Had a similar issue with my MI when standing for long periods, fuel and a strong spark present, turns out most of the injectors was leaking, plugs were wet and sooty.

Was able to fix it by whipping the plugs out, give them a clean if need be, disable the fuelling, turn her over for 10 seconds to get the excess fuel out, plugs in, fuel enabled job done

Best pre-start prep is to remove the plugs and spin it over for a while, gets everything flowing and oil pressure up and reduces the risk of flooding which may have happened here.

a dodgy temp sensor will cause it to flood, and you saying the plugs are wet, very wet maybe? say its overfueling.

Thanks for the responses. It does make perfect sense it was running perfectly before it went in the container but yeah you're absolutely right it stinks of fuel. So im gooing to blast out all the fuel, check for a decent spark and replace the temp sensor on Monday.

Fingers crossed.

Will report back to help anyone else out.

Have owned too many cars over the years and not one of them has had a forum half as good as this.

Right update,

Thanks for all the responce.

Removed plugs stopped fuel and turned over for atleast 10 secs, checked coil and found a good strong spark. put it all back together and still no joy.

The plugs are soaking wet so ive got a temp sensor on order, im also going for a new cap plugs and leads just in case. I must atmit I can here a sort or electrical click when it turns over, im on my own so its hard to tell, hoping its a doggy lead.

Fingers crossed

thanks for all the help

Was the container the car was stored in damp? If so I would thoroughly clean the gearbox to battery earth connection with emery paper, you can also attach a jump lead from the engine to the battery negative terminal, but make sure you get a good connection on the engine/gearbox.

I would not assume that the ignition circuit is functioning 100% just because you can visibly see a strong spark, I have fallen foul of this before.

Is it trying to ignite when turning over? or not at all?

thanks for the sugestion, will try that today contact cleaner and sand paper all round i think because the container does condensate, sadly its not starting at all, it is popping out of the exhaust but never acturally fired and ran. If that makes sence

Right update,

checked coil and found a good strong spark.

Are you checking for a spark after the dizzy?, give the contacts inside the dizzy and rotor a clean with either emery paper or sand paper.

Hi Mate,

I know you say it's got plenty of fuel but is it fresh fuel ?

I've had fuel going off on me before and the symptoms are exactly as you describe.

Agreed. The dizzy cap may well have moisture inside from sitting up..

First thing i would do is remove the injector plugs and spin the engine over, if all 4 plugs have good spark, it will start up until these plugs are dry which would indicate it was flooded, reconnect them and it should work, but it may not be main problem.

You lot know all the tricks!

The plan for tomorrow is drain tank and fresh fuel then that great little trick of pulling the plugs on the injectors and a good ole clean up of the cap.

Sounds stupid but I have actually missed tinkering with the pug and although its still not running it was great fun today. Again massive thanks everyone.

Failing this i'm going to get some holy water :)

Its Alive :P:D

bang on the money you lot! found the spring on the centre contact in the dizzy cap was broken, meaning a strong spark at the coil but not getting to the plugs :(

must admit after the oil got around and warm its running better than ever, seams the clean out of old fuel and the fact that every electrical connector in the engine has been cleaned was worth doing after all.

great to have it running, game on now

Again many thanks for all your help and I hope this helps someone out in the future

Happy days
