I've got the bug for a classic 911, before the 968 shape,

anyone know what to look for, what to watch out for..anyone owned one.. how bad do they really handle?

this is more pipe dream, as i would have to ditch the slipper(mx-5), and the pug...

but i do have a serious bug for one at the moment.. it's not an itch, it's an ache.

cheers

J

Don't buy a lemon is all I can say or it will hurt in the pocket. Expensive parts is just the start of it with them from what I know of them, but most are usually well looked after and dealer serviced all there life, even now!

Do you mean before 964?

The later ones are apparently the ones to go for. From 87 onwards, the G50 gearbox was introduced and is supposed to be much better than the previous box.

Pick of the bunch, for me, has to be the 3.2 Club Sport. An RS in all but name and the prices are now reflecting this. A couple of years ago, you could get one for around £15k. However, they now seem to command £35k or more.

One for sale 18 months ago...

Very similar, for a lot less money is the Super Sport.

A guy I know has one, he fetched it along to Cadwell Park one afternoon when I was doing a full day and signed on for the afternoon for a run round. He had never done a track day before so I rode in with him for his first go round, I have to say for an old thing it certainly went a lot better than I was expecting, his was a 3.0L NA version. I think they are one of those cars that you have to want because of what it is, rather than how fast it is.

I want a 964 although can't justify one as a weekend car at the mo.

I know a chap called Paul Stephens who deals in them if you need a safe intro. Also try 911 Virgins for info.

I'd avoid both of them.

Why? Always been tempted by 911virgin.com and was considering using them when i do eventually take the plunge into 911's.

1986 carrera.... best model by far if you cant afford a turbo, make sure its been serviced had the valve adjustments and doesnot leak oil at all, or have overly rusty exhaust ports and system, clutch isnt too heavy, though they are heavy standard and that it engages gears cold!!! theres bargains out there but look for accident damage and service history is a must....

I have a lhd carrera based convertible in the usa with a 3 litre fuel injected lump. drives across california , nevada and arizona every year never misses a beat!!! electric tail never work though!!

you will never regret owning a 911 unless you buy a crock!!!
