Xu9 Girdle/brace With Steel Sump Vs Alu Sump

Recommended Posts

Razkin

I recently bought my first Xu9 (1.9 8V) alloy block. It has a girdle/brace/sump spacer(??) and a steel sump. I want to upgrade to a RGY/RGX oil pump and a windage(like the RFS) tray. The sump spacer will then not fit anymore.

Is a alu sump as rigid/strong as the steel/sump spacer setup, does it even matter?

It should be fine with the alloy sump imo.

The windage tray won't fit the alloy blocks without modiying the big end bolts to accept spacers & bolts to fit it, they are a different thread to those on the XU10 engine soits not a simple job.

The spacer is more of a block stiffener (1.9 GTI steel sump is shallower than the 1.6 sump) but I've run engines without it before & the engine I've recently built has done away with the spacer in favour of the alloy baffled sump.

Graham.

I did not know that the thread was different. Bit of a bummer as I already ordered the bolts as used in the XU10. Ah well at least the bolts aren't expensive. I will leave the windage tray out the and run the alloy sump.
