205 Xs - Mpg Economy?

Recommended Posts

michael_jenkins

Hi All

I'm doing about 70 miles / day. All of it motorway at 70mph.

At 70mph the engine revs at 4000rpm, which is obviously quite high due to the gearing.

I was hoping to get 40MPG/45MPG but I'm beginning to think it's going to be more like 30MPG?

Am I right in thinking this, what do you get out of an XS on motorway miles?

Thanks

Mike

From memory, I used to average around 38mpg from mine in a mix of motorway and A-road driving, and a few mpg lower in winter.

I used to be able to squeeze 40mph out of mine when it was standard, went up to about 43 when i stripped it out

Hmm, wonder if I have a problem then? I brimmed the tank and have done 159.6miles. I now have half a tank according to the fuel gauge, on flat ground

I'm working it out that it's doing around 30mpg. I'm travelling at 6am and 3pm so there is no traffic and a constant 70mph speed at 99.9% of the distance.

Hmm, something really not right then. Mines stripped out, just a cage and a drivers seat at the moment!

Unless the fuel gauge will slowly drop from now on?

Don't trust Peugeot gauges, you may as well as some random bystander to guess how much fuel you have in the tank. My MPG did go back down to about 9 when i put the bike carbs on and started flooring it everywhere

so your looking to get 300 miles off a tank, how many Liters in a pug tank? 35-40? thats not terrible for a car that is 20 years old and running on a solex twin carb with a very short gear box.....

Maybe look to fit a different gear box or get the carb re tuned if you want to improve it. or more PSI's always help lol

I would say the carb is maybe abit rich, the XS I just picked up is running super rich so I will be adjusting that soon! I think you can find all the info about what screw on the carb does what. quite tricky as its very fine adjustments. I'm asuming its a TU not XY xs?

Doesn't sound too bad, the mileage you're getting. When I used my Xs daily, I got around 350 miles to a tank, the tanks aren't very big.

Carb adjustment can make a difference but make sure you get someone who knows how to set a carb up properly, instead of just twiddling the screws and hoping for the best!

I ended up putting a 106 gti engine in mine and there really wasn't much difference in mpg between the two engines, maybe thats just my driving though...

I can do about 350 miles on my tuned 205 Euro Rallye too. And considering it has twin 40's I think that's brilliant. Cruising on the motorway runs mostly on the idle circuit on carbs.

Thats one of the things I love about these TU'S. Economy when you want it and still power when you need it.

I used to average 30-35mpg in the rallye with all the TU3S bits fitted.

I don't know how you make 350miles Chris - my hybrid made 275 to a tank if I was lucky. Mind you that was with lots of B road work, a serious dollop of loud peddle and a mahoosive grin

When mine was standard (TU3 1.4) I'd be getting about 42mpg out of it. (This was a good few years ago mind you!) Now with the engine it has (TB's, cam etc, also now a 1.6) I'll be getting about 35mpg from it which isn't bad at all considering.

hmmm, OK. Thanks for the comments, interesting stuff. I'm keeping an eye on the mileage so I'll let you know when the tank is empty and I'll work out my MPG.

I have a feeling it won't be anywhere near everyone elses MPG, maybe it is the carb?

Thanks again

Michael

Get the carb serviced. My Rallye used to run a smidge lean and I could get 400-500 miles to a tank. My record was western ireland to london and 650 miles on one fill up

Christ, how slowly were you driving to achieve that? From a quick calculation, 650 miles to 50 litres (assuming the tank was nigh-on dry) is 59.1mpg

I dont think it was that slow actually. maybe 65mph all the way with no traffic and only one stop to cross the sea.

650miles! That is epeic! The xs I just got it running supper rich, really smelly out the exhaust so need to have a little play. (I have a slight clue what I'm doing as I rebuilt the Rallye's old carb  )

My 205GT which I believe has the same engine as an XS had a carb that went out of tune, at one point I calculated 14MPG which is really good for a 1.4! :D

Best mines ever had was 38mpg, but my carb has never been set up right and probably needs a service.

Low 30's for everyday driving

i did 440 mile round trip to my old camp and back in my xs with the weber dvg carb on using 75 quids worth of petrol (light just on when filled up and light just on when i got home) this was when it was just over a pound a liter.

mixture of quite fast A roads and about 40 mile of dual carrageways, and about 60 motorways. 60/70 all the way.
