What is the sequence when tourqing the bolts up on an xs head?and what should i set the tourqe wrench to?thanks.

Check your haynes book, if you're using a new headgasket it will tell you on the leaflet that comes with it.

 

I would go out to my garage and look up my haynes for you, but..its cold and there are wolves out there.. :o:P

1st stage = 20Nm

 

2nd stage = angle tighten through 240 degrees

 

Work from the centre outwards each time in a spiral. You need to torque all the bolts up to 20Nm before moving onto the 2nd stage.

20nm then 240 degrees.

sequence is start in middle and work round in circular motion,crude drawing but gives the idea of sequence.

 

8 4 1 5 9

. . . . .

 

. . . . .

7 3 2 6 10

 

1st stage = 20Nm

 

2nd stage = angle tighten through 240 degrees

I would think twice before doing the 2nd stage in one go. 240 degrees is a lot of torque to be putting on an aluminum head in one go and several sources (other than the haynes) reccomend that it is done in three stages

 

1: 20nm

2: 120degrees

3: 120degrees

 

This is the way i have done it before and it feels much nicer

It's possible that you wont get the stretch into the bolts that they are designed for if you don't go for the 240 degrees in one go. I agree it does seem overkill, but when doing it you notice that the bolt doesn't actually get any tighter because it's actually stretching. I've done this countless times on my various TU engines in the past and never had a problem.

agreed with new bolts you need to do the correct angular torque in 1 hit to get the correct stretch on them.

Has anyone measured used bolts, torqued using both above methods, to see how different the overall length is?

Thanks again,i will be useing new bolts,head has been skimmed too to the max as it has a kent fast road cam,does that change anything?

acourding to the french RTA magazine:

 

1st tighten up to 20 Nm

2nd tighten to 240º

 

there is this specific kind of haynes manual, but in french and its called file called RTA 205 mot TU-Rallye. the actual name of the magazine is Léxpert automobile Peugeot 205 tous types de moteur "TU". n266 it talks about all models except gti/cti.. very good stuff.

Yep, I've had a copy of one of those RTA manuals for many years, it's invaluable. The amount of data it has is amazing!!
