Classic Good / Bad Pug Day

Recommended Posts

kyepan

So both of my best mates work at paramount performance, they mostly do jags and porkas, remaps etc. They were in on saturday, and asked if i wanted to put the pug on the rollers. I'd arranged to go over there after getting the new tyres fitted and the tracking done. The tyres and tracking have fixed my handling issues nicely YAY..

for reference

Spec is MI-16, peterT stage 1 cam, peterT Chip, standard, 120k engine.

Anything around standard bhp would be fine considering the milage, it still feels fairly brisk, nothing fantastic.

We watched them run a 996 porsche, then i went to get the pug from where it was parked. The chap that owned the carrera loved the pug, even more when he realised it was MI powered, and it looked like a shed. He understood straight away it was for stealth.

In classic and almost poetic timing had predicted what was coming, at first i thought the alarm was playing up, as it would not turn over, but then i realised when the relay started chattering that the battery was flat. So, we had to bump start the car to get it onto the rollers.

It made 162bhp, the fuelling was all over the shop, will get a graph up, it would peak and trough like a mad thing, running very lean in lower midrage then getting rich at the top end.

afterwards we decided to pop straight home, it was getting dark, we got about a mile before the car died, we suspected alternator, one of my mates jumped it with his leads, and it would not stay running once you loaded it up, so the alternator was fecked.

I had to call the AA for the first time, to come and get me from deepest darkest slough, as we waited a hooded youth walked past, we watched him slow, stop and come back.. oh dear... As it turns out he had a 106 GTI, paid about 2k a year in insurance and had a soft spot for 205's.

The AA man also was a pug driver, and figured out we all knew cars pretty quickly. He had a 106 1.5 derv, with 180k on the clock.

So.. we stuck a new battery in it and i drove it home on side lights..

will put up a video soon.

Cheers

I'd get another run on the RR with a decent alternator before looking for any faults

I would be very happy with that power, also nice to see the pug knew it was going to get a pasting on the rollers so decided to throw a wobbly

Atleast its an easy fix.

most mi's i have seen on rollers made 145-155 bhp, a variety of 1.9's and 2.0's, but as many people say, its not the figure on the sheet that counts, its how it drives thats what matters.

is there any difference between the alternators on an 8v and 16v? and any preferred makes... mine looked fairly recently purchased, but the aa man was sure it was breaking down when warm and under load and the diode pack had gone, and no light on the dash

I just use whatever fits! All the ones I have lying about are Valeo units, though the 205's one was a Hella remanufactured valeo unit.

Air fuel ratio - how does this look to a trained eye?

AFR is all over the shop! running rich at the top will def be sacrificing horse power, i'd get another run with the new alternator and see if that makes a difference and go from there.

I'm no expert... but to me it looks about right at the top end, but super weak everywhere else, 15:1 is more like cruising mixtures!

I wonder if its even safe, though I don't know how much of an issue det is on N/A engines

I'd agree that it's looking distinctly lean rather than rich, assuming of course that the AFR is correct. I'd expect something in the 14:1-13.5:1 range at WOT.

I'm not 100% sure if it's used by the Mi ECU, but certainly 8v's use the throttle switch to sense full throttle and enrich the mixture accordingly, and if the switch is faulty then it feels distinctly flat (presumably running a little lean) so worth double checking that it works correctly - just needs a multimeter to check. I'd also agree that if the alternator was on its last legs / dead then you'd probably want to replace that and check again, as whilst the ECU should compensate for low battery voltage, I wouldn't like to guess at how well it does so.

(PS. What on earth is going on with the graphs around 6000rpm where it doubles back on itself? :P )

+1 looks a bit lean at the top end to me, super lean at lower revs.

and that would explain why it feels a bit flat when the battery is low, which has been happening frequently..

and goes like stink when it's just been charged!

sourcing alternator for fitting this saturday, then perhaps a back to back power run is in order.

lol epic fail on my part, not sure what i was thinking when i wrote that, i look at RR graphs most days! A back to back run would certainly be interesting, as mentioned def lacking in mid range so would be good to see a comparison.
