Engine Swap (help)

Recommended Posts

Jake_GTI

hi, my engine is dead unfortunately, think is is beyond repair, it's not a problem though as i have been offered a replacement engine with lower miles and in good running order from a phase 1.5 which is getting a gti6 conversion!

my problem is i dont have the time or knowledge to remove my dead engine and install the replacement!

does anyone on here live in west sussex and would be willing to do the job for me for beer tokens? the car also needs a few other bits replacing (driveshafts, anti roll links, track rod ends and front brake hoses) all of which i have at home ready to go on!

once the old engine is out i will be breaking it and selling anything thats not knackered probs via ebay as i'm not allowed to sell on here yet :)

cheers for looking,

jake

That would be a fair amount of beer tokens... realistically you probably should pay someone to do it properly or find the time and learn yourself.

especially when you factor in the other service items that need doing.

Miles is highly recommended and not a million miles away from you.

Cheers

can you ask the guy you getting the engine from to fit it?

i think you will be lucky to get someone to come round and do it unless you have a engine crane.

go on have a go you will get plenty of help off here.use the search on here and get a haynes manual and you will crack it.

ah must type faster

Its always good to say give it ago and its a good way to learn. However unless you have some one with the knowledge or the correct tools (of which there are plenty for an engine swap!) its better not to bodge! Pay some one to do it correctly (or help you) and cycle for now :o

Jobs like this sound quite straight forward, but you need to remember the car's 20+ years old and chances are as you go along you'll uncover loads of bits that need replacing like broken wiring, broken connecters, perished hoses, worn clutch, seized nuts and bolts. Plus I would change the timing belt and tensioner and water pump while the engines out, so before you know it it's turned into quite a big job, not really something someone wants to do for a few beers :o

the belts and pump etc on the new engine are all new with recipts, and it comes with a pretty much new silicone hose kit aswell! and i put a new clutch in my gearbox in jan last year so i know thats all good!

If you can change a clutch, then you should be ok to undertake the engine swap if you take your time and search/post here when uncertain. These undertakings always take longer and more cash than you originally anticipate. Why don't you consider buying a cheap banger to keep you on the road and therefore provide you with time to approach the engine swap without unreasonable pressure.

i didnt change the clutch myself, im no mechanic so i paid someone else to do it for me! how much roughly would it cost me to get the engine put in along with the other work that needs doing roughly?

To switch the engine like for like would be around £500 + other parts if they break etc. as i was in the same boat and asked Miles....

Have you decided what to do yet? You could swap an engine in a day if everything goes to plan.

I could maybe help you do it. You're not too far from me.. Only problem is I don't drink!

You could swap an engine in a day if everything goes to plan.

....and at the same time, you could swap the engine in a week or more depending on how much stuff is broken/knackered/seized when doing the swap.

I'm stuck in Wales over the weekend with nothing to do, but unfortunately I'm too far away.

I've swapped engines in one day and it should be straightforward if you have a crane, but with old cars there's always that one bolt that will give you a hard time and ruins all plans.

I'm always in Horsham and the Mrs works in Pulborough so I could help with a swap if you like, done swaps in a day before (when it all goes smoothly!) or if you could get the car to me in Surrey I could do the work at my house.:o

Do you have a complete engine btw? Didn't you say you've got a 1.9 to go in? Do you have all the ancillaries? AFM etc etc.. Is the gearbox still on the new engine?

If the engine is complete it should be very straight forward. :P I'll let you know if I can deffo help, got quite alot of free time ATM! :o

unfortunately my tool kit consists of pretty much only mountain bike tools and screwdrivers! i am able to get hold of tools though!

the engine is a 1.6 and yes it has all ancillaries, and the gearbox, i was however considering keeping my box as it's the original ph1 (be3?) box and it has a new clutch in!

It would be a BE1 and that age and takes 5mins to swap gearboxes with the engine out of the car.
