Custom Gear Kit

Hi, I am going to be fitting the 4.43 FD from the mi16 to a 1.9 gearbox.

can I fit 5th from the mi16 to give me a good cruising rpm?

also is it possible to make 1st gear a little longer, as it may be too low for selecting the gear for handrake turns. or does 1st have to be fitted with the 2nd gear from the same shaft?

i am going to be using the car for road rallys, but I intend to use it to go to work apx 60 miles of motorway now and again.

fitting to a standard gti6 engine

That combination is great. That's still a relatively long 1st gear. Mi16's use to burn clutches with that combo. Don't use an Mi16 5th. The gap from 4th to 5th will be too big and you'll hate it. There is a fifth in between, 0.81:1, which was fitted to the Mi16x4 and some diesels. That would be a better choice if you thought 0.865:1 is too short.

I would have thought for your use it would be good.

what sort of speed will you be looking at 7K in 4th Tom. That for me would be the deciding factor how often will you be going that fast and for how long.

At a guess I would say not often and not for long. I can only think of a couple of times I have needed 5 on an event, I run a std 1.6 box.

Miles

1 & 2 have to be changed as a pair as do 3 & 4 as the gears are matched on the shafts, 5 uses 3 different types of bush as well so finding the right one is more luck than anything else

1.9 gear cluster on 4.43 Mi16 FD, 195 50 15 tyres.

mph/1000 rpm.

5.2 8.2 11.2 14.2 17.5

mph @ 7250 (standard PH2 on gti6 rev limit)

38 60 81 103 127

upshift RPM in next gear (6500 RPM shift point, peak power in a gti6)

1-2nd 4118 2-3rd 4778 3-4th 5114 4-5th 5285

MI16 5th on MI16 FD gives theoretical 145 mph top speed on the limiter, 500 RPM lower @ 70 mph.

1st gear is longer than a 1.6 box, gap to 2nd smaller than 1.6.

been in a stock 1.6 gti engined rally car with this combination and it really did make a big difference to it, would imagine it to be quite frantic with the extra slug of torque the GTI6 has.

thanks for the detailed reply WP. given that at 70 mph the mi16 5th would only be 500 rpm lower reving than the 1.9 box, ill just keep the 1.9 5th gear.

what you are saying is, when changing up gears at peek rpm, the revs drop to just over the magic 4k rpm, so as soon as i plant my foot after the change it is just going to take off because the engine is already on 'cam' ?

sounds good to me, maybe too fast for road rallys but why not do it if i have the bits!

yup, no need to keep it revving till 7250, just shift at peak power around 6500 and drop right onto the torque.
