Brake Fluid Cap Won't Tighten

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

After changing the coppe pipes my brake cap won't tighten, just as it's about to get tight it 'overtightens' and skips a thread, going back to square one. I don't think the lid is broken, can't see any cracks on the lid or the bottle so not really sure!

Is the reservoir easy to change, does it just pop off? Are they the same as any others in the scrapyard?

I got a resevoir from peugeot for about a fiver. The caps are really expenive new probably because they come with the level sensor.

If you do decide to swap the reservoir, get a pair of new seals where it fits in to the MC. They are only a few quid.

Yeah I did think the seals looked a bit past it. I'll price it all up tomorrow at work - does anyone know if the caps are the same throughout the range, ie 106, 306 etc?

It really doesn't get tight before it pops back round - enough so that if you turn it to where it's tightest and give it a knock it will just pop off.

Can anyone tell me if the master cylinder from a 1.8D will be sufficiant? Are they all the same or will the 'output' be lower, I assume it will only be a 3 port like the 1.6GTI?

Did you check the rubber seal on the cap? they're prone to wearing away and making the caps not fit properly.

It looks okay, for what its worth I think ill replace the MC and bottle at the same time.

From memory I think the diesel is same as the 1.9 gti with 4 ports, but they can still be fitted to the 3 port 1.6 system as new masters normally come with a blank plug

I didn't know if it was 19mm bore or 20.6mm, but then again does it matter? Will it mean I will have longer travel in the pedal or will it mean decreased function of the brakes?

The 406 reservoir fits and the cap is a nicer fit, maybe newere 205 reservoirs are the same I'm not sure; but I had troudble with the easibleed pressurised bleeders on the 205 reservoir (the cap didn't really fit prooperly and blew of), but on the 406 res. it was always fine.
