Hopefully someone here might be able to shed some light. I'm getting a rattle at low revs/idle on my 1.9 8v, coming roughly somewhere from the crank pulley side of the car. Story is I turned the car over one very cold day in December and I *think* the water in the block may have frozen up (Too many top-ups, not enough antifreeze) due to it being really hard to turn over. Any ways, it fired up after struggling to turn over but a naughty little rattle has now reared it's ugly head.

The cam belt, water pump and tensioner were all replaced when I bought the car back in September-ish time and they've only covered a few thousand miles. I've got no loss of power nor have I got the familiar (to me) death rattle so I'm not quite sure what may be causing it. Only thing I can think of is I've maybe knackered the bearings in the tensioner somehow....although I'm not quite sure how a car struggling to turn over may cause this....

If it's any help I may be able to see if my phone can pick the rattle up later and post it up, might be familiar to someone else....

If the water in the block had frozen then your water pump needs to be chanced. The "propeller"(I don't know what it is in English) brakes loose from the shaft. This serves as a fuse to prevent any proper catastrophe if pump gets stuck.

Surely if that was the case then the car would be overheating? Not had any problems at all, apart from it sounding like a diesel...

Turning over if frozen will have put serious strain on water pump and timing belt the fact it was all changed in September is irrelevant.

Only option is to get it stripped down and checked/changed first of though I would start engine with alternator belt off just to rule out anything that drives.

Cheers chaps. Just back from the fixing the electric windows and central locking so shall give it a try without the alternator belt tomorrow. Tried getting a quick clip of it with my phone but the sound is shockingly bad so will give it another try with my helmet cam at the same time....

Reet, took the alternator belt off and let it tick over and it's not that. So I'm guessing it's down to either the belt tensioner or the water pump then. For anyone that might be even remotely interested below is a link to the noise that I shot on the helmet cam:

Sound familiar to anyone??
