Which Engine Conversion?

Recommended Posts

sam jfm

I have been considering an engine change, its currently a 1.4 tu on carbs etc. But now i want more go, the car is a rally car so it will mean moving up a class or two but i dont know what to fit?

I would say Mi16 or one of the 2.0 variants, BUT i have an MA box with a very expensive diff in it!

So i thought 106gti engine and keep the diff, BUT i have read that the handling is effected negitivley.

I want to keep it as simple and as cheap as possible because at the end of the day i want to use it.

In your experiance what would you suggest i do?

I could do but im still not going to get the same amount of power as i would do with a conversion, thing is if it was a sole rally car i would but its not; i need it to do trackdays which are quite dull in a 1.4

Any engine conversion you do is going to negativley alter the handerling as (I assume your currently running a alli block TU?) 1360 ali blocks are THE best handerling 205. I'v read 106 GTI engine go really well and is a fair amount amount of power and very tunable without going up to heavy 2L (I know GTI6 engines are very heavy as I carried a complete block and bottom end about 50m and that was too far B) oowww my hands B) !!)

If your gearbox is up to the job then I'd go 106 gti / saxo vts engine.

Seem to respond well to fairly basic tuning too without having to change all the internals.

Ok, Ok I didn't read the first post fully B) .

But then what about the above quote?

I only put the link up to show what could be done. I would have thought 160-170 bhp engine would cost a lot less than 220bhp one.

Lol, I think what i was trying to get at is i have spent alot of money on the car already and now want to spend a little less but gain more (bigger engine)

Read through some of Sandy's build topics to get some ideas. The 106 Xsi 1.6 8v is a pretty good engine by all accounts.

Having done 106 GTI engine, 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 8v in my 205s, I'd say a tuned, TB'd TU 1.6 8v offers the best value. You can build a stonking engine for fairly decent money, they're punchy, sound great and generally alot of fun, which is alot more enduring than simple figures!

XUs and EWs obviously have more potential power wise, but as a package, hard to call.

I will look into the 1.6 8v, what are the main drawbacks with the gti engine; handling, fitting? ( I would automaticly ashume that a 16v would be better)

whats an EW?

alloy block 1.8 2.0 and 2.2 from later vehicles.

As 8v engines go, the TU is a corker, it runs the 16v pretty close for power and has a fantastic manner and delivery, done right. Tuning the 16v is almost twice as expensive and, it is heavier. The weight penalty with the TU is further forward, not everyone complains, but I find it noticeable.

Ok then 1.6 8v it is, just so happens i have a 1.4 xsi head lying around - Did i read somewhere that this is a good head to use?

Yep, good head, doesn't need much work to be awesome, pretty good as it is. 16v bottom end or late VTR will give you flat topped pistons to raise CR, if you can stretch to it, BP320 cam, notch the pistons, one of our bike TBs kit and management, raceland exh manifold.... good motor.

You sir read my mind! I have looked at your kits and they seem like the way to go, how much does machining roughly cost? ball park estimate?

Just fit a k20 engine and you'll never have to mess around again.

Voila

Hardly plug and play though is it? :P

Check out my project thread for 1.6 8V TU inspiration. (See my sig). Since it was RR'd and mapped it's had an SRD flowed head and increased compression ratio. It goes sooo much better than before, but have yet to have it on the RR to see the output. I reckon around 150bhp....
