Someone Just Knocked On My Front Door

Recommended Posts

Daviewonder

I Was just at home with my Girlfriend having something to eat when there was a knock on the door. I opened the door and standing there was a short gentleman holding his business card, he asked who's the 106 gti in the drive was, so I said it was mine, he then asked if I wanted to scrap it as it hadn't been used since 2007 (which means he must have been snooping around in the drive), I said no I didn't want to sell it as it was an ongoing project.

He then asked "who's is the red 205 in the road" I said it was mine and he said "Do you wanna scrap it mate? I can take it away now if you want!" I said I wasn't interested and he handed me his card and went on his way. I was a little offended as I like to think my 205 is quite tidy and I'm pretty sure its not at the scrapping stage just yet!

Anyone else had this kind of thing happen?

It's a f-reg so to some people that means it's 22years old and and old banger. If you'd have some non-descript japansese hatch on a 02-plate he'd never have asked.

Daviewonder, as this is obviously being scrapped now, please supply a price for the wind deflector and all associated clips posted.

Thanks B)

I had exactly the same for my R-reg 306 a few months ago after it had been sat on my drive for about a year. They must spot them and them check the reg's for sorn. Either way, i soon told him where to go and the 306 is back on the road now!

This is really starting to worry me now. I ordered some parts from the red car he is breaking, 20 mins have passed and I still haven't received them yet.

B) I should have asked how much he was willing to pay, probably would've been more than webuyanycar.com

Hi,

exactly same thing happened here in sunny Leamington on Tuesday this week. Knock on the door - do you want to sell the car on the drive ( a VW polo). He said he'd seen it had no tax - did I want to sell it.

A chancer.

(tax disc always drops off the screen and I forget to put it back)

But it does mean he'd been having a nose round though.

Beware.

regards

Dave

When I lived in London I often used to get flyers from the local breaker left on my windscreen. Kind of understandable though, considering it often didn't get moved for months at a time and looked unkempt. But on one occasion I did find they'd actually twisted the wiper arm upwards when they put the flyer under it, which obviously pissed me off.

Luckily I've had more than enough positive comments over the years to compensate for offensive situations like these.

These chancers are everywhere frankly.

Last year the Sorrento 205 I had at the time (was Feb's, now AndyC's) had a note put under the wiper blade from one of these people, despite it being taxed, MOT, insured and having not sat for any time. I can only assume it was thanks to the paintwork on the roof having the normal Phase 2 lacquer issues, as my white 205 that was parked next to it didn't have a note.

I thought it was a bit cheeky leaving a note on an obviously still taxed and used car anyway, but what cheesed me off is that where they were parked was round the side of my house out of sight from the road - the only way that they'd have seen them was to have deliberately gone snooping around on private property.

Unsurprisingly I didn't take them up on their offer to scrap my car, but for my own amusement I did put the note underneath my neighbours nearly-new car.... although sadly I wasn't around when he came out and found it, as I'm sure that would have been a sight to behold B)

I scrapped my red 205 and they never asked for the V5 form and still gave me £80 for it. So not surprising cars go missing for scrap tbh.

Considering round here its nearly £200 a ton for scrap I'm not surprised !

That is gold :D

Don't forget that if he ever asks if you got a card to say "No, but I saw the guy and he loved the 205" :D

Used to get this all the time when I lived in Hat(e)field.. all the local gyppos used to come and offer to take away "the old banger on the drive". I got so pissed off with one of them, who came round about twice a week, that I told him to never come back (or words to that effect).

When I was breaking the 306 in the summer i had pikeys at my door several times a day. They all use the same bulls*it though.. "oh well it's not worth nothing, mate, i can take it away now for free, anybody else would charge you" etc etc. I told them all to come back in a few weeks, but they were always back the next day. In the end I gave it to the first person I hadn't seen before for free. Was funny explaining that to all the repeat pikeys when they came back to find it gone.

There was a similar story to this on Retro Rides a while back, some guy asked the owner of a Mk1 Caddy pickup if he wanted to scrap it and he told them to go away, the next day they came back with a low loader and tried to take it from his driveway while he wasn't home. Luckly the guys next door neighbour chased them away and called the police.

I had a guy ask me if i wanted to sell my old 405 Mi once but it was in the car park in town and i don't think he had any intention of scrapping it

My parents received a flyer through the letterbox offering cash for my 'scrap' 205 a few weeks back.

That's motivated me a bit to get it progressed, and also insured, incase it goes missing!

One of our suppliers down in Rochdale got hit last year. They loaded up his wagon overnight with all the stainless steel they could find, and also complete jobs awaiting shipping. What a nightmare.

Doesn't help when the scrap dealers themselves are equally bent...

Recently had this both knocking at the door and numbers under the wipers, I nicely declined the offer and off he went, kept his number just incase anything went missing or i needed a bit of cash

I've been sat at home at random times and had a nice Irish fella knock on the door asking if I want to sell the car, this has happened maybe 3 times.

It makes me wonder how many times he's knocked as I usually work 9-5.

We left an ironing board behind our wheelie bin a few weeks back, not visible from the road. Went to take it to the tip and it had gone!

I remember that story, and it made me absolutely livid at the time. The caddy looked like a banger but he'd spent hundreds of hours and much money on it. He was VR6ing it or something, wasn't he?
