Think I've Found The Source Of My Leaky Footwells

When I took the doors off to get the sill replaced I noticed that the wiring loom going to the door runs through a connector before entering the rubber tube. Anyway the connector looked loose so I gave it a poke and the plastic nut that keeps it tight to make the seal on the A pillar had broken. So I think the water has been going down between the door and the wing, as it normally would, but is leaking into the footwells through the hole for this connector.

 

I put a bit of silicone between the plastic nut and the connector but because the nut has broken it just wouldn't keep it tight.

So any ideas of how I can keep this from leaking or where I can get a replacement nut? Can't seem to find anything on SB.

 

I've never used anything like Tigerseal before - is it 'sticky' as well as a sealant? Would it be suitable to put a bead around the edge to seal it, but also rely on it keeping it in place?

you may find a suitable replacement locking ring on a later pug, 106/saxo 306 xsara etc, they are used on other loom connections not just the doors but there are a few sizes used.

I'd personally be surprised if you were getting any significant amount of water through that hole to be honest.

 

Leaking windscreen rubber, blocked sill and sunroof drains are obvious candidates for wet front footwells if you're sure it's not the heater matrix that's leaking. All three can let in a fair amount of water, certainly more than I'd expect an ill-fitting door connect to do

Well the sill was changed today, the windscreen will be refitted with the respray next week, it leaks when standing so isn't the heater matrix and I've just resealed so the quarter windows, so if it's still leaking after the repsray it must be the sunroof drains.

or the boot.

I've seen it trickle down behind the rear quarter panel trim on its merry way to the footwells.

Nope I can see where the water is coming from when it rains, and it's certainly from the A pillar - apart from the leaking quarter windows which I have fixed.

My water leak used to come down through the fan blower hole. Never did cure it on that particular GTI, I have seen pictures of some sort of filter that stopped leaves etc going down through the hole and mine definitely never had that fitted, not sure it would have stopped the water anyway.

mine to, don't know what to do about it, car has been in garage for years, now that I keep it outside it gets flooded

IIRC, the plastic scuttle panel should be blocked directly above the blower inlet to stop water going directly down in to it. I think there is actually a solid plastic panel under the scuttle panel that covers the holes in the scuttle planel (hopefully that makes some sense).

 

Obviously you'll still get water collecting in the scuttle, but since the blower inlet is raised above the scuttle the water should not in theory be able to make it's way in there. However, if your drains at either side (top and back of the wings) are blocked with leaves and crud, obviously the scuttle can fill with water and will likely find it's way in to the blower inlet.

 

So, check your plastic scuttle panel is solid above the inlet and not letting water drip directly down, and check your drians are clear of crap. Also have a look around the edge of the inlet where it is raised to see if there are any holes/gaps/cracks that could be allowing water in.

 

Obey - have you seen your leak coming down the A pillar or could it possibly be comig down the bulkhead in the corner near the A pillar? Cos the other failure area (which I think will now be getting more common due to age) is knackered sealant in a corner of the bulkhead up behind the dash. Been discussed on here many, many times.

had fair share of leaks on mine.

 

pop out window seals,grey plastic trim on tailgate had a few clips missing so rain would enter behind and get through clip holes.also had water entering through blower intake becaue scuttle trim was damaged and the drains were blocked with crap on N/S.

 

as said above i do not think there would be enough water entering via the loom plug on door time will tell though.

The drains and the rubber seal around the fan blower intake were the first things i checked, and they were OK. Nevertheless, it's definatelly comming in from the fan intake, and from above, because I put a nylon bag over it and placed the plastic scuttle panel back in position. In a few days, when I went back to check it out, surely enough, there was water on the nylon which I used to cover the blower intake, just don't understand it yet where from.
