Hi,

I'm thinking of buying Xsara 2.0 HDI 2001 year.Is it good or bad idea, does some of you owned and have any experience with 2.0 HDI 90 bhp,is it good and reliably engine and is there something I should look about especially.

Thanks in advance

Can't speak for the Xsara HDi particularly, but I've got its sister car, the 306 HDi.

Mine's a '99 model on 190k miles now, and in my ownership it has proved to be very reliable - only faults I've had have been related to the fuel pump relay and rebuilding the rear beam. Otherwise, it's just had regular servicing and a few consumable parts like brake pads and a set of tyres. I've had it around 18 months, and have been doing around 2000 miles a month in it since I bought it.

The 90hp HDi engine, whilst economical (I average around 50mpg) isn't particularly quick - the Xsara was available with the 110hp HDi and I would personally look out for one of those.

As above I can't speak or the Xsara but can't see why it would be massively different to my 306 hdi bar the possibility of buying one with the extra 20bhp (& assosciated torque boost).

I've had my 306 hdi over two years & approaching 30k with no further problems than the hunting at idle / low rpm I bought it with, which even after trying various sensors & different injectors as advised isn't fixed. :)

I also refurbed the rear beam soon after I bought it.

Even with that I wouldn't hesitate to get another 306 or a Xsara if I was in the market for one.

Hopeully once I get the 67k hdi engine into mine this year it'll be remapped to ~120bhp.

Graham.

I owned a 306 hdi (90) for 6 months and, although it was sluggish, I was filling up less than once a month. :)

I've got 2 306 HDI 90bhp, both faultless, also for a 406 HDI 110 as tow car, will see what the 406 is like when ready but tbh I don't think you can beat a HDI powered car! Also, my 306 did/do's the ring in 13ish mins from memory!

If you were in my position what would you buy?

Xsara 2.0 HDI , Astra 1.7 TD (Opel engine , year 1999) , Peugeot 306 (2001).

They are all from first owners, very well looked (with service history from new) and the km are very similar, also the prices are very similar.

So what would you recommend ??? :D

Anything but the Arsetra, but then again I have an irrational hatred of Vauxhalls.

The 306 is prettier, but the Xsara will probably be cheaper. Your call.

I think my preference would be:

Xsara 110 HDi

306 HDi

Xsara 90 HDi

Astra 1.7DTi

I think that age diesel Astra is the one that has lots of bother with the injector pumps failing, and gearboxes too IIRC. Certainly do your research if you're considering going down that route, because buying the wrong one could be a costly mistake.

Considered a Mk1 Ford Focus TDCi? They're very good cars and I'd have one in preference to a 306 or Xsara.

Oddly, this isn't actually always the case, atleast when it comes to HDi's - I guess because there's so many more 306's out there.

In my case YES it's cheaper, but it's not so mint like the other two cars.(front bumper is a lit a bit of cracked)Nothing serious but needs a respray.

I've got a 2003 Xsara HDi for my daily commute - I do about 80 miles a day. It's now on 140k miles and still going strong. The 110bhp engine seems quite a bit more powerful than the 90bhp version. The engine in this also seems much much quieter and more refined than the previous 206 and 306 HDi's I had before which is nice. I get 55ish mpg from it day in day out.

Cheap to run, nice to drive (Its a ZX\306 really) and parts are easy to find. The rear axle is just starting to go in mine, i've managed to gain a few more months from it by shoving some grease nipples into it and pumping the bearings full of fresh grease.

I've driven both the 90 and 110 versions long term. Never had any engine reliability issues. As already said, go for the 110 version, they are pretty nippy on the right roads, would give the average 205 gti a good run for its money i'd say.
