Fuel Pump Gremlins!

Recommended Posts

MikeM

I need a bit of help regarding my fuel pump! I recently fitted a 1.9 engine to my 1.6 shell and all was well, bar the usual airflow and sad shenanigans! However after getting those sorted out I am now faced with a new problem. I like to leave my car with the battery disconnected when its in the garage. So off I went into the garage to tinker with the car, connected the battery and the fuel pump started with the ignition off!

Whats going on here then? What worries me even more is that is intermittent sometimes it works fine and others it does that.

I have a set of twin 45's on there way to me, and wanted to get the fuel pump working properly so that I can get put it all together for an autotest thats coming up soon.

Any help appreciated! Very tempted to leave the gti alone and go back to playing in the xs ;)

cheers, Mike

it sounds like a sticking relay. iirc they are in the dash around where your right knee is, i used to tap the dash ant the relay would un-stick. you could try that, or replace the relay, or run a switch, or use a carb 205 tank, with a facet red top pump and a filter king?

I will try a known working relay on it to see if that solves it. I had thought of using a switch, but with a relay and also connected to the ignition live, however I would rather it just worked as its supposed to.

I will spend the day with the multimeter tomorrow and check all connections/earths etc again. The sooner its out the garage the better!

cheers

better off just changing the relay as it powers fuel injectors aswell as the fuel pump.

the relay in question is indeed up by right knee secured next to ecu it is called the tachymetric relay.
