[project] The Ultimate Track 205

Thanks for the pic, much better than any of the eBay ones I've seen so far! I didn't know they came with that big mount attached, so they're probably out the window.

I got a little bored earlier and the weather was good, so I went out and did this:

That's roughly the position the engine will sit in, it's difficult to get a sense of how things will look without seeing them on the actual shell. I'll double-check the height when the sump arrives and also stick a bellhousing on before I go and weld anything in, but it gives some good perspective about leg-room and access for maintenance - spark plug changes could be interesting.

Bloody hell! Its going to be hidden. Bulkhead and tunnel is going to be a little toasty!

It's a race car, you have to put up with these things.

Maintenance will be a bit of an issue, but I have some ideas to get around it.. it won't actually look that bad once the rest of the original firewall is removed, the new one will sit quite a bit further back so it shouldn't look quite so drastic.

I'm sure with your knack for problem solving, the access to the engine wont be an issue for long!

You may find that with your exhaust tunnel needing to incorporate an exhaust manifold on the drivers side that there will not be a lot of room for a pedal box and obviously your feet! Our 309 was tight.

can always send the branches forwards before the collector sweeps back down underneath :)

Bingo! What he said. :D

The should be space to get the exhaust down past the engine. (emphasis on should)

Foot space is a bit of a concern and not really something I'll know for sure until I can get a seat in position, but from some rudimentary hovering in a seated position the pedals should be quite far back, hopefully far enough to gain a bit of space back.

Might have a MX5 diff unit I can weigh up for you later in the week.

We run a bmw E39 diff ratios available from 4.1 - 2.26 with many in-between. quite a compact unit I have one off the car so i will try and weigh it.

BMW shafts are very well made as well

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've found that the Ford 7" cwp options go up to (and above) 4.4 which is pretty ideal, so I think I'm probably going to go for that. :)

Probably around 40-45kgs that! That's what most BMW diffs are that are main iron with alloy backplate. It looks similar size to my M Coupe/E30 6cylinder diff, difficult to lift. Funny that the entire gearbox AND diff in the 205 is much lighter than just the BMW diff on its own, but then it will probably handle massive power/torque in a heavy car. A diff off something small and rwd like has been suggest (MX-5, S2000) might be a better bet.

Oh they will, we put over 600bhp through those with shock loadings and swinging big tyres too, you can get ally casings and even ally diff carriers which mitigate the weight a bit though!

In even better news I may be able to use this XTrac diff after all, it turns out the Sadev box has a drop ratio to the output shaft, so the gear ratios are much more suitable than I'd thought.

So in a recent development, Mr Alex Crosse and Myself have acquired a rather nice unit for an absolute bargain price. There will be 3 of us sharing and 2 space frame Sports Libre builds side by side which should look rather good! :D

We're going for a clinical standard of cleanliness, and made a start today by painting the walls and ceiling white (was previously plain concrete).

Next job is to epoxy the floor and secure the window at the back :)

Do you need to transport your 'jig' to the new place or will you continue where you are till it's a rolling shell?

Yeah we're gonna make a removeable cover for that window, something we can padlock in. As you can imagine we're going to be pretty serious about security in this place!

I'll be taking the shell and jig down there next weekend, will have to get it level again but that shouldn't be much of a problem. :)

Looks like a nice place to continue the build, what was the address again...?

It should look even nicer in a couple of weeks' time. :D

Not telling. :P We have a serious c**t-related security concern at the moment so until that all blows over nobody is to know the location.

All jokes aside Cameron, if you want a serious, solid, big power engine for this beast, that represents good value for money.
