205 Gti6 Oil Cooler Mounting

Recommended Posts

tomcolinjones

Hello, soon to be installing the XU10J4RS engine, and I was wondering if anyone could advise on where to mount a 13 row mocal cooler, as the heat exchanger wont realy be usefull, and i am running twin fans to keep the coolant temperature down, so I cannot fit in front of the rad in usual gti place.

allthough it is not intender, the car will probarbly be going nose end into a few hedges, so behind the front splitter isnt ideal, as loosing oil = end of rally.

I had a go lowering/tilting the rad, and placing the oil cooler directly behind the grill, under the slam pannel. this would work well i guess, but leaves the radiator vounrable to puncture from hedges again, if the bumper gets pushed it.

has anyone who has tilted there rad had issues with cooling?

ideas and pictures would be great!

Thanks, Thom

Why did you post this in the TU section :lol:

Can you not just mount it behind the radiator and thats a fairly big cooler? suppose room is tight with the GTI6 inlet.

you see the problem i will have is not traveling at any great speed when driving it hard, maximum maybe 70/80 but wont happen often, (especialy with my lack of talent) usualy from 0mph at junctions to about 40/50mph. so i would like the twin fans to keep it cooler, as there would be little air flow over the rad, and i think verry hot oil is a disaster waiting to happen, so i was just wondering if anyone has fitted there oil cooler somewhere elso, or had problems with a tilted rad with any similar driving.

I have a single aftermarket fan (not as good as original) and a 13 row cooler. Never have problems in sunny Australia.

I should also mention, that i will be competing with a sump guard, so there will be little air flow over the sump.

this is the idea i was going for when i was going to use the mi16 engine, can anyone see any problems with the positioning of the radiator? not the mountings as they are tempoary to make sure everything fits around it, and the oil cooler could be a little lower.

and the loom covered with paint is no longer!

And obviously, i would have to customise a fan mount. i am sure i will need the extra cooling, as the 1360 tu used to get verry hot, with the gti radiator, and i found single fan was not sufficiant, so with the larger xu10, i think i may boil it

With the cooler a little lower, i think there would be realy good flow thrugh the cooler, with the bonnet and grill in place, as long as the radiator still works correctly

pic with bonnet down.

where can i get myself an uprated radiator? is the diesel one thicker? then i gues i could use single fan, and oil cooler in front of radiator.

The normal diesel rad is the same as the GTI. The turbo diesel rad is the bigger one. It's nearly twice as thick, but I don't know if there's enough room for it not to hit the GTI6 inlet.

Tom,

No need for any of this. I ran an Mi with std rad and fan and oil cooler on road rallys no problem. The only mod I made was to have a switch on the dash as well as a temp switch in the rad.

The oil you use will also play into this, i know from experience that cheap vavoline 10w40 will get to 110^C in under 2km on one event vs the vavoline racing 50 i was previously using which look a lot longer to heat up to that temp, it was a much cooler day when i was using the 10w40...

Proper racing oil will help with temp control also.
