88mm Crank S16 Questions

After crashing my car and losing the timing belt off a pulley its time to rebuild my engine, of course I would like to rebuild it to have a bit more power so I'm thinking :

 

Rebuild cylinder head with a petert stage 1 cam

Replace any damaged pistons (if there is any) plus add a 88mm crank from a 1.9 diesel which I have sitting about (I have the bearings and oil seals etc etc to go with it) but keep the 86mm bore

 

However reading on here some say there unreliable as the head gasket fails due to the increase in pressure, but some others say they have had no troubles with this set up

 

As this is going into my everyday road car I would like it to be quite reliable as I do about 800 to 1000 miles a month so I was going to use an MLS head gasket as that seems the gasket of choise for big boost turbo engines, I was going to use standard head bolts

 

Would standard head bolts be alright?

 

Would there be any other cause for concern using this engine in regards to reliability?

 

Any advice or stories from experience would be much appreciated

The biggest issue if keeping with a 86mm bore is the lip you tend to get on worn XU10 blocks which will trash the rings if you try running a longer throw crank. If it's bad enough then you can feel it with your fingernail, but otherwise run a deglazing/honing tool down the bores which will highlight any wear.

 

An 86x88 S16 that I did a few years back is still running fine in a friends car, putting out around 200hp with Mi16x4 cams and a pair of weber 45's.

Oh, and you don't mention what management you'll be using.

 

I know that Mi16 management doesn't cope, and I would suspect that S16 management won't cope either given the significant rise in compression ratio from using the longer throw crank. Certainly James_R tried to run a 86x88 S16 on 2-row Mi16 management melted the fire rings on the headgasket in about 3 laps of Bruntingthrope at FCS 2006 (I think) :D

Yeah I was planing on giving it a quick run down with a honing tool just to make sure, will I need to change the piston rings as well or will the standard size still be alright?

 

That engine sounds like a good one, I would like to see 200bhp out of mine but I'll hold off on the throttle bodys for now, I just want to get my car back on the road!

It can be mapped by Chipwizards afaik.

 

I think James can break anything, he managed to break an 8v :D

I did this to my 306 xsi (2.0 8v) and found no problems with the extra compression on either the standard management (MM8P) or the standard headgasket. I did speak to Wayne at Chipwizards re a remap but at £400 for unknown gains I decided against it. I was also fortunate in not having much by way of bore wear so the extra 1mm throw didnt matter.

Now that I think of it I remeber a lot of storys going about of 1.9 205 gti cranks and cams going in to the xu10j2 engine few years ago with no issues, I even thought about it myself when I 1st got the 306 (best engine I've ever had that 2.0 8v engine :lol: )

 

Anyway thanks for everyones input but I still wanna hear from some one having done it to an xu10j4 with the bosch mp3.2 ecu just to make sure as the 1.9 mi16 engine doesn't seem to like it.
