Part Worns

Hi, anyone used knackard tyres (non road legal tread depth but still tread left) for dry track days? Just a thought, would they over heat, just be generally crap?

Seems to make sense as these are unwanted at tyre fitters, and they are generally charged to have them taken away.

Ideas welcome!

Thanks

Matt

tyres with less read tend to last quite a bit longer as there's less rubber moving about creating heat.

its common practice for race cars that have to run road tyres to get them "buffed" which is basically removing a few mm of tread mechanically.

Yes. I used to pick up 13" A048Rs with 2mm on them for £10 a tyre from the caterham lads. Past their best but miles better than any road tyre.

What I generally do for trackdays is to use road tyres that are borderline illegal on a spare set of wheels ;)

Works pretty well and as said above, worn tyres work much better on track than new ones, as you don't have the tread blocks overheating and squirming around. It's also essentially free given that they're past being useable on the road, which is a significant saving over buying new (or even used) R888's or whatever.

(indeed, the set of wheels that you bought from me a while ago were the set I was going to mount the next set of worn tyres on, hence I was halfway through doing a quick refurb on them)

As i said, its a local friendly tyre place i use, that said they could help me with some nearly dead tyres, and free VS £100 for a R888, even though its not as good a tyre, is still a winner!!

Anthony: I have had the wheels sandblasted by a friend, so will soon be learning to spray, and keep them as my tidy, driving to track set.

Oh, off topic, but anyone know if Mitsibushi (Spelling?) wheels fit 205s? Just a thought.

Cheers

PANTS! I saw a set lurking in a store room a while ago, they were, i think, 15"/16" and must have been at least 7" wide!

Worth a go though, thanks for the info Welshpug!
