309 Gti Driveshafts....who Does The Best Quality Ones?

Recommended Posts

Chris H

I used to swear by the GKN shafts......used them for several years of rallying....but the newer type they do with the one piece shaft and joint seem crap.

They only seem to last a couple of rallies and then go bang. This has only been a problem with the shafts with gkn/loboro packaging.

So...what else is out there that is tried and tested.....any reviews of AMK or Shaftec etc?

I've seen these http://www.driveshaftstore.co.uk/index.php?search[partType]=*&search[make]=Peugeot&search[engine]=1900&search[year]=1988&search[side]=B&searchPart=&search[modelGroup]=309++Mk1+Gti&searchMode.x=44&searchMode.y=5&searchMode=makeModelYear

These come from the same company that owns Gripper diffs....ok the shafts are made in china...but for a USA company. I'm tempted to give them a go at that price!

Any advice is very welcome as it's not fun braking a driveshaft on the first stage of the rally!

AMK are the ones to get, I've tried Shaftec and was not impressed. AMK seem to be standing up pretty well on my turbo road 205 with 200+ ftlb.

I always got mine from Peugeot themselves, who I appreciate have them manufactured for them - who would have done those? GKN?

I've got two sets, the last set I used were standard 309 Pug ones (ie. OE) and have lasted far longer than I expected them too - several years in fact - but then I'm pretty gentle on them, so I'm told.

Have the OE suppliers to Pug changed in the last few years? If so I'll be careful before ordering some more for the new car...

I've been using the same pair of AMK shafts in my 205 now for the past 4 years and they've been excellent. I took them apart recently for some new boots and there were no visable signs of wear

You can get AMK drive shafts from Unipart/partco. Good prices to.

I've had issues with all of them inc GKN but not as much as the others, Only since they have closed the UK site thou,

AMK have supplied a shaft that was too short for a 205, I have no idea how that one worked, Shafttec I have given up on as I must of know of at least 10 sets fail within 6 months of rare road use.

I think its luck of the draw now as they have been recon'd too many times now and some are on the limit
