I'm doing an 8v rebuild at the mo. I have a lateish 'donor' 1.9 (torx head bolt, eccentric tensioner) and the block that's getting rebuilt is a reasonably early 1.6 (hex head bolt, spring loaded tensioner)

I have some questions on interchangeability of blocks and liners if I may.

Bare blocks..... Identical? Will the spring loaded tensioner and (shorter belt IIRC) be fine on a late block? 1.6 oil pump be ok in a 1.9 block? While we are on the subject, is it the tensioner that dictates what cam belt you use or something else?

Reason being the donor 1.9 lump is out and in bits, the 1.6 is still in the car.

I will be building a 1.6.

It would be handy to get the 1.9 block cleaned and painted before I rip out the 1.6, and use it instead.

Liners, should I need too can I make a good set of 4 from the 8? Then send the best 4 off for honing?

Obviously crank/rods/pistons/injectors/afm/ecu etc... Will all be 1.6 rather than a mismatch :)

Cheers

tensioner type is what dictates belt length, and afaik the type of timing belt cover too.

would imagine the eccentric tensioner will fit the early block but have never tried, eccentric kit is much cheaper than the earlier sprung kit (SKF kit from ECP is a full tenner less)

internally the same, so pump liners etc you can swap around.

Not on all blocks as some drillings are different, But the early type of tensioner will fit any block inc the 16v one. I;d fit the spring loaded one as it's so much easier to fit than anything else and cheaper too.

Any other part is fine and fit's any XU engine internally

Splendid :P

Thankyou Mr WP + Mr Miles :)

One last small worry... The donor engine has been on an engine stand for 2/3 years outside (covered up). Do you guys think this would of done any harm? (im thinking warpage etc..)

Also what plastigauge should I get? ***0.001"-0.007"/0.025mm-0.175mm*** or the ***0.007"- 0.020"/ 0.175mm - 0.50mm*** ??

Im guessing the first one. What are the actual tollerances for the mains and big ends?

Cheers
