Mi16 4x4 Differential Questions

Right im thinking of changing a rear diff on an mi164x4.Now i was wondering if i change to a 4.1 from a 4,4 (i think thats what they are standard) will i knacker anything up? because i hav`nt geared the front up the same?.

 

Or will the central diff cater for this?.Does it have a central diff?

 

And the last thing is does mi164x4 have standard be3 gears in ? ,I mean could i swap them for the ones from a be4 box wich im currently using on a 205?

 

Thanks for the help as im not to clued up on 4x4 stuff

The transfer case output is 43 x 13 and the rear final drive is 13 x 43. Thus effectively 1:1. The beauty of the system is that you just change the gearbox ratios, or the cwp final drive ratio, which are before the transfer case. So any changes to either changes the ALL the gearing downstream. So put in any BE3 cwp you want. ie 3.62, 3.94, 4.06 etc.

And the internal gears of the box are the same, Its only the Diff which is different if you can call it that more of a solid drive

Right cheers for all the info guys especialy petert you`ve been a massive help.My plan was to use a mi16 4x4 box and a subaru rear diff (because these are peanuts and theres loads of them),To convert my 205 to 4x4.But we`ve come to the conclusion that the subaru rear diff is`nt the right ratio so would end up knackering up.

 

So my next plan of action is to keep the standard be3 box or be4 in my case and fit a diff from something i,e a subaru where the long driveshaft would go ,So that the bit where the prop goes facing towards the back of the car then get a custom shaft made to fit into the diff and back into the front hub.

 

Then fit another diff to the rear of the car and obviously sort some rear shafts out etc etc.

 

Now what are the thoughts on this i realise i would probably have to weld the new front diff up ,But i would still have the diff in the standard box.

 

Now nothing is set in stone here its just an idea and i know its alot of work modifying exhausts etc but could be worth it

 

Thanks for any input and i have to much time on my hands when im off work hence the silly ideas

Im unsure now on about the way they would rotate they might drive against each other?

 

ill give it some more thought

 

Edit after abit more though i would have to run the front diff upside down and it should work ( i think)

I would keep looking for a mi16x4 rear diff, it's the only bit of the Peugeot 4wd system that’s any good. I paid £200 for a non running mi16x4 which I used as a donor. There must be someone here with a diff kicking around they would part with. The Mitsubishi evo 5 or 6 has the same ratios but the rear diff has the overly complicated active yaw control and they can be expensive, the rs model had a mechanical rear diff if you can find one.

I'm running the standard mi16x4 running gear on my 205 and it works well but I want to up the power and the standard transfer box is a bit week and would cost lots to strengthen. I'v been looking at using the evo gearbox and transfer box after seeing AlexN project thread (well worth a read). It would need some custom parts made to get it to work but should give me a reliable setup.

Im running an uprated engine so i think it might destroy the mi16 transfer,The reason i wanted to use a subaru rear diff was the ease of fitting it ,Alexn pug is a nice peice of kit ,Ive looked for some evo running gear and its really expensive,I reckon it would cost about £1000 just for the box and diff so it put me off that idea.

 

Hence the idea above .

Impreza rear diffs come in many ratios, be sure what you are buying.

 

They are cheap and plentyful though anywhere from 40quid upwards depending on ratio and whether its a plated version or not.

 

Rear diff ratios are

3.545 (most uk cars)

3.9 (early imports)

4.111 (early imports/uk cars)

4.444 (most 2 doors and late sti's)

 

Obviously this is only a guide so you need to check.

 

Be aware that there where driveshaft changes too, early shafts dont clip into a later diff on one side (they changed the circlip arrangement.......) And there is a few bigger versions about off type r's (R180), most cars have the R160 version.

Thanks thats a big help ,Im going to take my diff out of my normal gearbox and see what ratio it is then try and get to rear diffs to match,

 

And can anyone tell me weather i need a centre diff to moderate the front wheels and rear wheels i,e both turning at the same speed or weather they think the above idea will work ?
