What Car Should I Buy?

Recommended Posts

monkee87

Evening all.

As I'm selling my GTi ATM, it's got me thinking about what car to buy..

Deffo want another Peugeot!

So options are;

Another GTi - I've had a few, but they've all been standard 8v, so thinking 16v or turbo.

A rallye - it'll be cheaper than a GTi, so I could spend some money on the car.

XS - same as a rallye really.

Would have to a a phase 2 for sure!

OR...

A 306 GTi6/rallye/S16 - not too sure if I want to get away from the 205! It's an option though.

how about mixing the two, 205gti6/5, or build a charged one maybe?

I'm selling mine to buy something already converted, it's far cheaper. That's if I get a turbo or 16v. I just want something different to what I've had previously.

Unless you pay alot for a converted one then most the time it'll end up costing more money and headaches than converting your current one, especially if yours is a descent shell and running gear to start with.

I don't think you should buy a GTI6 Rallye! <_<

You seem to have fairly broad requirements, from a (rather slow!) Rallye to a 16v or turbo, maybe you should slim line what you want from it and what you will be using it for?

Well, I'd like something faster than what I've got ATM. That's why I'm thinking 16v or turbo.

Reason I said rallye is because they're cheaper than a gti and it'll leave me more money to do a conversion.

Just wanted opinions really.

Aaaahhh! I can assure you doing the conversion yourself will cost you double than if you were buy one converted all ready. (I know this)

HOWEVER you will have peace of mind if you carry out the conversion yourself (if you have the tools/knowledge!) and a dodgy converted may well cost a lot in the long run.

As allye says,

is it for track, road, or both or what? why are you selling yours? if it is a tidy car then convert it yourself.. dont be such a wimp

and if you buy a cheep one that has been converted, but has been tilted et.c it is going to cost a fair amount of money to get it relyable and useful.

It's solely for road use as my daily driver... Sorry, should have said!

I'm selling mine as I'd like a tidier shell (Mine has paint issues) Don't have the money to have a respray AND do a conversion. :( Probably sounds really pedantic, but I'd just like a better base car to start from. (Like we all do I'm sure!)

If I can get a tidy shell cheap enough I will convert it myself, it'll be a fun challenge. Won't be anything i couldn't do I'm sure.

They seem to go either way, sometimes real cheap and sometimes you get dreamers asking £1500 for a standard tired one!

I may have just been unfortunate, but having had my fingers burned too many times I'm of the opinion that there are very few people you can trust out there, be they individuals or businesses. So I'm of the opinion that even if you pay top dollar for what seems like a tidy car that has been converted "the right way" by "the right people", don't be surprised if turns out to be a turd shortly after. The sad truth is...

1 - If you buy an already converted car you no idea of what shoddy workmanship may be hiding from view. Don't trust receipts and reputations, as it amounts to jack s*it

2 - If you pay someone to do the conversion you at least have some comeback if something goes wrong, but there's still plenty of trading "professionals" out there who will happily cut a corner to make a buck

3 - Doing the work yourself is the only way you will know what's been done and how it's been done. But too many people have got out of their depth this way and that's another reason there are so many unfinished projects and badly bodged together conversions out there.

It's the one in my sig. A 1991 1.9 Miami blue. It's on PH and eBay, did put a link up on here to try and get some more interest. I put it up for £950, which is a fair price considering it's condition.

It's an honest car, but I want something with a bit more poke! <_<

That's what I'm hoping...do it once do it right and all that.

Mine's mint except for the paintwork, and it's not costing all that much to convert ATM...although the old engine is still in, just collecting bits!

im just on with buying a 306 gti6 after owning 5 205s and a fair difference between the 5 205's

im hoping the gti6 will live up to its name or i would be dissapointed, only reason i have gone for a 306 is because our lass will be driving it more than me,and hopefully she can drive it her way then i can get in it on a weekend and give it a good spanking still and the odd track day

and it means i have a gti6 engine ready for the next 205 ;)

you'll love it mate (as long as it's a good one ;) )

it'll still need some money throwing at it though, just like any 205 and 309 ;)

The 306 is a good step, not quite as sharp out the box due to the bush's in the suspension but once replaced the 306 handles better and the engine is good and on par with the 205 (Not 16v) drive's better in traffic and is allot safer.

ZX, as above but lighter ;)

Seriously though, if the reason that you sold your 205 is because you wanted something faster, I suspect that you'll be distinctly disappointed with a 306 GTi-6 / Xsara VTS - whilst good cars in their own right, they're not really any quicker than a good 1.9 GTi in a straight line, and perhaps more importantly, they *feel* slower, less eager and throwing them around you can feel the weight and dulled responses that brings.

Sorting out the standard wobbly suspension bits makes a big difference though as Miles says, and with some half-decent suspension can corner and handle very well indeed. Still feels distinctly lacking engine-wise though, and if it's important to you, they're not particularly good on petrol either for the performance.

106 XSi, Rallye or GTi might be worth a look as well if you've small feet - they're good fun and chuckable like a 205, and indeed I would say is more the replacement for the 205 than the distinctly mediocre 206 GTi ever was.

I know that you said that you wanted another Peugeot, but have you considered a Clio 172/182? They're probably the closest thing to a modern day 205 GTi - quick, light, handle well, and have dubious build quality

I think I'm going to stick with a 205. I know my way round them as I've had a fair few now! gonna go for a turbo or 16v this time though. Got a nice bit of money to burn, so I think I can get a nice spec one. :)

or, if I can get one cheap enough, build one up myself. I'd actually quite like to do it this way for my own piece of mind.
