Decisions On A Cheap'ish' Engine Build

Recommended Posts

Miles

As title really,

So thinking out loud on which route to take to get around the 200hp mark in the old 306 GTi6 270k beast without looking to modified for my standard Road going class.

I want to beat the old Honda S2000 this year so I just need some more up hill power or another 10mph finish line speed.

I’ve got a few idea’s myself so just seeing if anyone else has any

Cannot do things like that, Wrong class and up against a 550bhp Evo, Plus I don't like Chargers only Turbo's

Obvious question is what rules are you bound by in your class/championship?

I assume original fit engine block and head is a must, but do you have to retain original plenum inlet or anything like that?

Anything you like, Just no forced induction unless you want to move up a class, I'm keen on keeping the std inlet to make it look std which really is the main thing

Looks like it's cams and compression then and move up a few hundred revs. Assuming your 270K bores & pistons are ok, I'd machine the piston pockets, deck the block, fit new inlet cam, reground exhaust cam, new valve springs and LS1 or LS2 coils (assuming you already have aftermarket management).

What about gearing to match? Can you fit a custom BE3? That's cheap and easy to build.

A better option is to regrind both original cams to solid and fit solid lifters. That way you don't have to worry about base circle diameters, times your own doing the fit up, and you get reliability. I now buy lash caps for AUS$7 each. Not worth the time making them.

Well the engine's gone on this far so it should be good, Pistons will get pocket'd more so thats easy so Cam's can be blanks to gain more lift and Duration, Not sure on lifters yet but was thinking to keep the orginal type.

It will run on a Omex 710 to keep the exisiting coils and I have a excellent mapper 5 minutes away, But the Phase 1's had a 7500rpm limit as standard which I wouldn;t want to go past really unless it was rebuilt

If regrinding to solid you can get more lift/duration by reducing the base circle, then shim it up as required. RS cams have plenty of meat to play with. Talk to a local grinder. You'd be surprised how little it costs.

Are you allowed to make the car more lightweight ? If so, then strip it down a lot more to make it go a bit quicker.

* Note: I don't know how well stripped down your car currently is, or whether its allowed in the class.

It is to a small degree, like allot of the sound deading has gone but the key it must look standard and as it's currently my Dads road car I cannot go too far, He is 80.

See if you can find out what the BTCC cars did to their inlets. If you look carefully you can see they have been cut open and some internal mods done and then welded up. That must have been done for a reason.

The other thing would be a sneaky larger throttle body and a tweak to the standard ECU to maximise the benefits. Obviously hidden gems like cams etc would be good but I guess you would be able to hear a lumpy cam at scrutineering.

I very much doubt a larger throttle body would be needed, the D8 V6 engine makes do with the very same one.

IIRC the K20A in the Integra has a smaller throttle body and makes 220 bhp!

a few people on the 306 forum tried btcc style inlets and found torque was lost, this wasn't particularly a concern for the touring cars with close ratio boxes and 240bhp+ to play with.

Perhaps elongate the internal trumpets then to gain torque which may suit your needs better? Or even space the inlet out slightly to get the same effect? However I am guessing!!

Having thought's about sticking my current high spec engine into another 306, Just need to think about car logistic's and space

If it's std class you won't be doing a great deal then mate, but weight and handling wise how will a 306 beat a 205 without bending the rules (let alone beat an S2000)

handling is fine, weight is the only issue.

Quite easy really, in std form the only bit I'm slower is over the finish line, So just need some more power which with my Race engine should be around 220bhp on bodies, there's a 106 there too which I leave for dead and he's been doing Sprints and Hillclimbs for years

You can use a race engine on tb's in standard class?

You'd better not head North Miles you'll be hanged :)

Yes in the std class over 2000cc there was a Evo with around 550bhp so pretty much anyting goes as long as it has road trim and MOT

Sounds like the scrutineers like to see an interesting car as opposed to enforcing the actual rules.

Lets face it North or South, the rules are the same, it's how (or whether they can be bothered to be ) enforced!!

- or not as the case may be :)

The blue book is the blue book - no, yes no, yes no yes - where is my white stick!

If all else fails - as Cameron would say - put a

on it ! Edited by TT205

It's fine in the Rules of the local champinship (BARC), I think the only std car was me, the S2000 has coil overs, Floating Disc's that I know of

I really hate the Blue book, THe same rules should apply to everything within reason, It would make life so easy
