Anyone Made Their Own Door Cards?

Recommended Posts

mattw

I'm looking at doing something with my doors and rear quarters as the door cards and pieces of trim have been removed.

I was thinking of carbon, aluminium or plastic sheeting. I was wondering what you guys have done and if it was easy to do and easy to fix to the car?

As above, I have kept the doorcards but there is no trim in the back of the car at all.

Im in the process of making some door cards and full rear qtr panels

Laid a massive sheet of 1ply Fibreglass and am cutting the panels out of that, half the weight of ally sheet

Will get pics asap of progress so far

Is there really any point, surely they won't be significantly lighter than the originals which hardly weight anything anyway?

I certainly wouldn't want original plastic panels in my race 205 and for a few 100grams I can tidy up the inside with a few panels.

You can get some nice 'ish' thin sheet plastic type material which does the job well

You can get black fibre glass sheet which is nice and light and looks reasonably tidy. I wouldn't say the original door cards weigh nothing, compared to black glass they're seriously heavy

I just used some sheet 'plastic' (might be some type of acrylic, not sure). Why bother with all the hassle of laying up flat GRP for some door cards?! The acrylic is much more flexible/resilient, easier to cut, and probably cheaper too if you account for the time spent laying it up...

Search for Steve Webster Plastics, that's where I get it from (no affiliation)....

You can buy black glass pre laid up, no hassle involved. It's not particularly hard to cut either as long as you have a decent knife.

I think plastic might be the way to go - cheap and easy to cut. What thickness would be best?
