406 S16 Be3 Clutch Change

Recommended Posts

Got called on by a friend who is local, and we met in the army. we share intrests in modified cars, and have a general knowledge of mechanics as we used to work for oposing dealerships on shrewsbury / oswestry.

so i go to his house this afternoon, and he says "your a pug man, get this f**kin box out"

the job is a clutch change on a W reg 406 mk2 s16 (2.0l 16v cast block) with a be3 'think' box. with hydraulic normal way round clutch.

so i got all the wiring off, after i marked up with tipex. took the slave off, b/ball joits off, shafts out (easy for a change!) bell housing / starter bolts out. gearbox mount off, completely. then we tried to get the box off.. it split from the block, but we couldnt get it out!

i thaught never.. the subframe on a 406 cant get in the way, it comes out peice of p*ss in a 205, why will it not fit through the gap on a 406?

soo. i droped the subframe. eventualy got the box out, after brusing fingers and my nose!

The clutch arm was heavily worn due to bearing exploded. but the cone was ok, usualy these are nakered when i do them on 306/206 diesels.

so its going back on tommorow.

but it is the worst clutch i have done, exept maybe for a mitsubishi otlander back in the dealer make a bonus days!

so if anyone hasnt done one, and gets asked by a friend to do it, its not as easy as a 205!

Not an S16, it'll be an XU10J4R.

taking the stud off and removing the speedo housing makes it a lot easier.

I find boxes in a 406 a lot easier than 306.

BE3 never got a hydraulic clutch, and the XU never got the BE4 box, must have been an alloy block EW !
