What A Useless Waste Of Metal

I had to write this after the snow we've had, I knew they where pretty poor anyway but even getting off the drive yesterday on the Ice where the old 406 thinks nothing of it the 306 got stuck with this Diff in it, I cannot write what I think of these on any Forum ***** ***** ***** :)

My open-diff'd 306 has more traction and is far more useable in this weather than my Tran-X'd 205.... I'll just ignore the fact that the 306 weighs as much as a small moon, has an diseasal engine so weezy and underpowered that it struggles to break traction, and has winter tyres, and point the finger at the diff :)

My Integra with oem helical lsd was being passed by bmw's coming up a hill recently... but then I'm running paradas so can't really be suprised!

If it's spinning one wheel on a patch of ice then a little gentle left foot braking will give the torsen something to work against. Plate diffs won't be a whole lot better either unless it's set with a high preload for forest rally/mud use.

would have thrt a plate diff would be better than an open diff? the drive has got to go somewhere rite? cant just spin the gearbox but not the wheel? and like rippthrough says, a bit of left foot brake would make both wheels spin wouldnt it? as if they both have traction. whereas a open diff would just spinn up the wheel without grip.

I wouldn't put it quite like that, the left foot brake pre-loads the diff making it lock up so both wheels are transmitting the power they're given, wouldn't necessarily make them spin unless they both have no traction. But that's little tricky to do in ice/snow and i don't really see how you can put it into action as it needs you already moving and some traction to work, the point of it is to pre-load the diff as you're cornering so it's locked up ready for you to put the power on as you exit the corner.

Technique is defiantly the key. I managed to tow a civic vti earlier up the road and my hilly snowed on drive way with my trusty Nissan!

With a Quaiffe they only bias torque from one side to the other, I think the ratio is about 3:1 for the Peugeot unit, so, as my dad always used to say, 3 times nothing is still nothing :(

A little left foot braking allows it to bias 3x the brake torque to the side with traction on slippery/icy surfaces. If it still won't go it's not the diff it's the tyres!
