R6 Throttle Bodies....?

Recommended Posts

S13Nick

hello, just after abit of advice really, i acquired these 'throttle bodies' yesterday, and well just thinking about it im abit confused as well the common use of r6 'carbs' on smallish engine, but these obviously arent carbs as they have injectors and a few sensors, i got them with adapter plates for a 106 gti and all the trumpets etc

all im wondering is? can they still be used? if someone could give me abit of info please

pictures below, if anyone would be interested?

Yes they can be used as normally in conjuction with an aftermarket ecu ,But you could try and make them work with the standard one youll need to rig a tps up and probably wire the bike injectors up providing they are same impedence as the ones your currently using ,Allso if your using any sort of mass air flow youll need to rig something up with that.

A lot of hassle mate and not worth the gains sell them on .Let someone else have the head ache,Unless you feel like a challenge

Try a search been coverd quite abit on gsxr bodies though basicly the same

My Mi is making 197bhp with bike bodies so I think its worth the gains and hassle. It's not cheap to do though due to the aftermarket ECU etc.

Ah right got the stupid silicone hoses joining them?

Only worth doing if you can tig weld some flanges on them ,And then the manifold is still far from ideal

And i reckon youd probably have got some similar power gains by using a gti6 manifold

Its not just about bhp its about driveability aswell ,Very weird pedal travel drove me mad allthough can be sorted

And just to add ive been down this route and got the t shirt,So im not just slating these for no reason

Done properly like Jrod's setup they are VERY good, and are in no way bodged, nor do they have a funny throttle pedal feel.

Drop eeyore a PM as he does a manifold to suit bike bodies to TU 8v and 16v, as well as XU16v engines, I think the cost is around £550 complete if you supply suitable bodies.

What you get in return is a manifold custom fabricated with the bodies securely bolted on and trumpets to suit, a throttle quadrant that perfectly matches the original pedal, and provisions for a fuel rail.

As mentioned, you will need an ECU that can be mapped to run them.

If you have bodges like silicone hoses joining them then imo it doesnt matter whether you have bike bodies, bike carbs, webers, jenveys or a rocket. It's never going to be great. I'm not sure whats far from ideal about the manifolds Colin makes...?

Really? try it and see!

It drives very well, A nice amount of torque with a useable spread.

Now don't take offence to this but did you just try and do it on the cheap? If so don't expect results. Thats the problem with alot of people on here... They think as a 205 is cheap that the modifications should be cheap aswell, unless you really know what you are doing it doesn't really work like that!

i used a set of these on mine to start with (with silicone joiners  ) and it was a nightmare from start to finish (and it still wasnt very cheap tbh)

luckily i sold them on for a good wedge, not on here i might add.

i plan to do it again but proper like, using a similar idea to sandy's with a proper built manifold and linkages etc and NO silicone joiners :D

its worth doing.....if its done right, no doubt.

if only i could tig weld it would be so much easier

could it be done with a alloy mi16 or gti6 manifold? cut shorter, and fitted with weber/delorto flanges? tigged at the correct spacings obviously, and angle. and then ported internaly for smooth flow? this would only work for twin carbs i know, but couldnt it also be done for itb's? and then its just the problem of management.

This is my track day car with bike body conversion made by the co owner of the car.

YES it uses the "god forbid" silicone hoses, BUT in this case the only function they perform is to seal the join between the bodies and the adaptor spigots that are welded and blended into the manifold.

The bodies and airbox are bracketed down to the engine block, you probably could have a good go at hoisting the engine out with a rope around the bodies, they are well supported shall we say.

Now a lot of people slate bike bodies, but I honestly feel that if done properly as per the conversion offered by Sandy / Colin Satchell, or as per this example done by an Engineer/Fabricator with an eye for detail, they are a good setup.

You cannot see from this picture, this setup uses a second set of injectors in the 90mm trumpets within the airbox, result was ~180bhp on a STANDARD (and tired) Mi16 1.9 engine.

I have tried the gti6 manifold and im getting very similar results maybe a little under thanks, assuming yours is at the flywheel figure? ,Now if you had said it was a proper job like colins setup then i would have`nt jumped on you but you never .So i assumed you ment you had used the same as the above i.e silicone joiners. And again what i was refering to when i said far from ideal i ment you tig`d a flange on to a cutdown manifold not a proper made manifold like colins.

And yes mine was a bodge same as the op ,It was a nightmare it would be running fine etc do a few runs and everything went to cock ,Then the silicone joiners kept loosening up a real nightmare,I didnt expect massive results just to see if i could do it ,And i would quite fancy ago with your setup (colins kit) as there quite impressive

And tom what rad are you using on the trackcar?

Another one for the Colin setup using Bike Bodies as I use them on my 205 GTi6 (mapped by Sandy). Awesome bit of kit, car is very driveable and tons of torque thoughout the rev range.
