Motorway Rush Hour Time Saving Driving

I think it's funny that the 2 people to disagree about leaving gaps are two of our younger members. I used to be the same, but I guess I've mellowed with age.

I can understand the frustration when you are in a hurry and you see someone allowing other traffic to pull in front, and the perceived delay it may cause. But I think the reality is that you are getting worked up for nothing. Chances are that in those circumstances you aren't going to get more than a couple of lane dodgers pulling in front over the course of a few miles, so you've been delayed by a whole extra few car lengths. Oh no! Then consider that those same lane dodgers will probably move to another lane in a few minutes, and you are back to square one again. Once the traffic starts to flow normally again you can soon make up those lost seconds.

So why get so worked up about someone leaving a gap big enough for others to pull in to? It's ridiculous and doesn't do your sanity any good. Just learn to chill out and be a bit more relaxed about it. Staying relaxed will do you far more good in a traffic jam than any other driving tips.

And this comes from one the most short tempered, impatient, angry people around ;)

Surely if you get stuck in a traffic jam, is best to to keep cool and wait your turn, not drive like an asshole an cause more frustration. ;)

Allye is younger than me, so i iz well mellower innit ;) I used to be quite impatient when i was driving but i'm so much more relaxed now. I get a lift to work with the most impatient driver in the world, say we're driving down the motorway at 100 (the vans top speed) and a car pulls infront doing 95, he will moan like hell, change down to 4th and jab the crap out of the throttle until the car infront pulls out of the way at which point he will cry out "FINALLY" ram the van back in to 5th and plant it until he pulls past. Very bloody annoying.

Have you seen the car is drive for a daily, it is impossible to get worked up in a beige interior.

;) uummmm beige!

I by no means stick 2inches behind the car infront, I too like to leave it in first and roll along, infact I rather enjoy seeing just how long I can roll along in first for, but I do like to close and lane jumpers do my nut in :D I never realised the inside lane was the quickest though, as I tend to use motorways at quite times.

I seem to remember JC saying he's never used his brakes on the motorway which clearly is not true but the intention behind it is correct, and that is the only place I'v ever herd or been told not to brake on the motorway as it causes jams - until I read some report on how traffic jams are formed!

I try my best to keep a constant speed in buisy times, and avoid to use my brakes as much as possible, and prevent other people braking just because the car in front has. i do tend to get as close to the car in front if the slow lane is empty and there is a tosser doing the limit in the fast lane (dual carrageway) to get them to move out into the lane they belong in, otherwise i would have to do the dreaded undertake, but needs must! i think this is my youth driving coming out!

you can undertake if your lane is going quicker than the one with all the dickheads doing a tad over 70 in.

if you do that, your a MASSIVE weapon... and you give me THE RAGE.

that is all.

I agree. playing chicken is to be honest f***ing stupid and one day will cause an accident

I spent many years commuting the M25 and there was an art to it. I will 90% of the time be moving in the fastest lane. If you are in the outside lane thinking this is the overtaking lane so I should be faster then drift across then you need to chill a little. The stupid manoeuvre would not make me panic or swerve.

Its not a case of just hopping from one lane to another. You have to learn the road and how the people use it. Bottlenecks will happen in the same place every day, certain junctions allow you to hop off and on again, either with long sliproads so you get 3/4 mile further or open into a moving flow of traffic. You might have a big traffic jam for people turning off but it merges into multiple lanes so clears at the last minute etc.

On unknown roads you have to look ahead to read how the traffic reacts to junctions to see which lane is best but you are more likely better off in the inside lane with all the lorries as they leave a bigger gap between vehicles so flow better, maybe with a later move to the middle lane as people are entering the motorway.

There is no way to move fast through the traffic. Thats impossible. You have to relax, be smooth and aware. Leave a big enough gap so you use little brake as possible, but keep enough speed so not too many people will dive in front. If a few do it rarely matters as others ahead will be hopping out of your way too.
