dake205 0 Posted December 17, 2010 hi guys, been looking at 205's recently as a track car again but seriously don't know what to pick, options are road going gti6 on throttle bodies coilovers big brakes etc would need work to get to track car spec 2x 2ltr 8v turbos one with good track spec but very pricey, one road spec seems more show than go but cheap and an mi16 cheap but apply nitrous any opinions or experiences would be helpful, cheers
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted December 18, 2010 It will be cheaper to buy one already track prepared than to convert a road car.
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted December 18, 2010 Don't bother with nitrous for a track car as it will be too expensive to run. Don't underestimate a good fast road car. They hold more value than dedicated track cars. The only thing that is necessarily missing is a cage and this can even be done well without losing all the interior. You have to ask yourself how often you will be on track in it at approx £200 a pop with event, fuels and tyres, wear etc. Living where you do too, I would try an capitalise on some of the great local back roads you have too so adjustable suspension like coil overs would be good to switch from fast road to track settings
dake205 0 Posted December 19, 2010 thanks for replies guys, the problem i see is the 205 cars already track prepared up here are £2k+ and i've seen lots of turbo mi16 gti6 conversions ranging from 300-1200 that would require work to become track car but some are full bhoona and some require only minor details to make track car. it will be a dedicated track car with full cage as i've got an escort cosworth as a good spec fast road car and wouldn't go on track without rollcage after seeing a few lucky escapes. cheers
boldy205 75 Posted December 19, 2010 As said before, on average a decent home built Gti6/8V Turbo etc track car up for sale at £2.5K, will most likely have MUCH more actually spent on it, therefore, you will be getting a lot of parts for your money. Things that really make a difference are polly bushes, uprated brakes (not fancy million pot callipers, just rebuilt 306 items with good pads+disks) braided hoses etc, not just whacking in a 200 brake engine. Hope this helps, sorry if it sounds a bit blunt! All the best with your hunt. Matt
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted December 20, 2010 Got to say, Unless you want to spend allot on getting the car upto scratch then ignore the cheap ones (Unless your very lucky) as most are s**t heaps and or badly DIY'd which I would say around 75% are from what I see coming into me for work. dake205 0 Posted December 20, 2010 thanks for the replies again guys, boldy205 if you read the first post you will see the type of spec cars i have looked at, i clearly have no intention of whacking in a 200 bhp motor without the rest to back it. the road going ones have alot of the bits required for a track car and are half the price of the decent spec track car, i already have lots of spares from previous track 205's so really all i would need to sort out would be the brake lines and roll cage the original post was really to get peoples view on the each of the options as a decent fast track car, but what maintenance and reliability issues will be most cost effective. miles unfortunately your right most are going to have been botched diy'd but these things will always be expected and help bring initial cost down and some are less serious given the fact it will just be a dedicated track car. however that does not mean i will be using a non road legal as they are required to have an mot now or to have been scrutineered to race cheers
craig_007 1 Posted December 20, 2010 I've got a good 205mi thats track based that I could be tempted to sell on. Currnelty no fuel/air set up on it though as I was in the middle of getting throttle bodies sorted out !! It's fully track prep'd tho, Full engine rebuild this year with all paper work to prove purchase dates etc. Running approx 210/215psi per cylinder with pertert stage 2 inlet and piper stage 1 exhaust should be good for 190/200 bhp with bodies. If interested I can go into more detail !!
dake205 0 Posted December 20, 2010 do you have the throttle bodies etc, the mi was the cheapest and last option but may be tempted by spec and price the mi i've already seen has all the right bits but as usual projects start and never finish, it is also the cheapest but would require a full build from pallets and boxes, whereas the road cars are the same condition as described by craig with the post above built to a stage of almost complete but if the right money is flashed they can be bought
craig_007 1 Posted December 20, 2010 I've paid the deposit on the bodies and I'm just waiting on them coming off the car now so yes I have the bodies and management but I will need to fit them to get the car fired up again ! The bodies are costing a fair few pounds so will reflect in the price if your interested. Brief spec is.. roll cage bucket seats & harnesses afr gauge,Oil pressure gauge AP 2 pot calipers Koni suspension 17row oil cooler C5 steelies with R888 tyres 2 1/4" custom exhaust with maniflow manifold (from dr sarty)
locosaki 0 Posted December 20, 2010 Are you fecking mad ?? Just got it to the way you want it. Forget about the 205 turbo mate, Stick with this and the bodies I'm desperate to see this going !
boldy205 75 Posted December 20, 2010 Ok, i think i would go for a standard 1.6 or 1.9 with well set up suspension, chassis and brakes, as its the corners where a 205 will catch other cars, so if you can brake later and corner faster, you will be ahead on the next straight, and people will wonder how the hell you keep ahead of the turbo Jap nutters with a standard engine! dake205 0 Posted December 21, 2010 thanks craig 007 and screwloose for the offers on your track cars, both sound good but you's haven't mentioned a price, also i was looking to go different to mi but the majority of track cars seem to be mi anyway, also how do you feel they perform on track compared against the gti6/8v turbos

MikeyB13 0 Posted December 21, 2010 You have to ask yourself how often you will be on track in it at approx £200 a pop with event, fuels and tyres, wear etc. Us lucky scots have something called Speed Sundays. £50 for a days crazy track action at knockhill
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted December 21, 2010 Having seen videos of Speed Sunday with some nutters literally shoving people out of the way I'm not sure I'd want to take my car on there!
MikeyB13 0 Posted December 21, 2010 Its not as bad as folk make out, most of the people that go are regulars. I would say there are actually more big offs at the posh track days. Ive taken my Exige on a few times and must admit it was a bit scary but you dont need to race nutters if you dont want to. I just pulled in and let them past in the 205 things might be a bit different
craig_007 1 Posted December 21, 2010 Thats 205 turbo is a well spec'd car,I actually thought about it for myself hence offering mine up forsale. I've seen the car at knockhill myself and was on track with it at the same time and my standard mi with carbs couldn't look at it !! The one thing that put me off is the car isn't as clean as my own but in saying that,If it's a track car that won't matter. Good car for the cash. Hoping to see it at knockhill again after I get the bodies with the cams on mine too see what difference it has made against it, Still won't have the torque though !! Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted December 21, 2010 A rule I've made for track cars, do not try to make them mint, do not get too attached. Then when you spank it you will not be too upset!
dake205 0 Posted December 22, 2010 A rule I've made for track cars, do not try to make them mint, do not get too attached. Then when you spank it you will not be too upset! tom have you ever done the 1/4 mile in the 205 turbo or the mi16, what times do you reckon they would do seen the build on your mini and the times etc, really like the sound of it, whats the cost on buying/building 1 of them cheers
