405 Glow Plugs

Recommended Posts

omega

my dads 405 1.9 diesel started fine when it was -12 but now its difficult to start in the mornings but once warm it starts fine,so i think maybe the glow plugs have had enough.

if i take them out and but some jump leads on the battery and then but the neg to the body of the glowplug and the pos to the top will this test them?

or is there another way?

cheers

Yes that will test them, they will glow red hot in a second or two.

You can test for a dead glow plug by touching the tip with a wire from the battery, if it sparks the plug is good but if there's nothing it's dead without having to remove them.

Yes, it glow red hot & it should light up instantly on contact with powr.

make sure you use decent pliers or mole grips, as they do get bloody hot in a very short space of time.

one thing I would do is change the fuel filter, temperatures this cold can make diesel quite thick and an ageing filter wont help the flow, also draining any water from the water drain will help.

Worth checking that the glow plug relay is working correctly as well - should have 12v to the plugs when the glow plug preheat light is on (and a few seconds afterwards I believe)

@no tip: could be injector faulty. Advise to check.
