Xu10j2 Valve Springs

Recommended Posts

quat-fro

Hello,

Hopefully this isn't a repeat topic, I've searched and searched and couldn't find the answer on here at all.

Apparently, due to their slightly larger valves XU10J2 engines have higher rated springs than you'd find in your XU5's and 9's and are therefore better suited for a lumpier cam than the standard springs.

My local dealer can get me any spring I ask for, the trouble is, I'm not sure exactly which are the ones I need and I'd prefer not to have to buy several sets to find out!!

Can anyone help me track them down or conversely, dispel the myth and point me in a batter direction.

Cheers,

Tom.

To ensure you get the best from a different cam, the springs do need to be matched with the cam. Best thing really is to seek advice from the cam supplier as they will be able to suggest the valve spring rate needed.

Well of course!

It's just that a customer of mine is looking to save every last penny. The XU10 springs were a suggestion by another member of this forum who said that they were more than capable of big revs with a lumpy cam. Unfortunately he couldn't tell me exactly which engine they were out of...my local dealers only appear to list the one type for all XU10 variants but I need to pin them down exactly, as I could really do without a disaster!!

In that case order one and test it to find rate per inch and the length at which it coil binds.

the part number you want is 0952 54 thats the only spring listed for the XU10J2 engine

there are 2 other spring types listed for the XU10 engines but they are the 16v heads not the 8v

However that valve spring is also as listed as being avavilbe on 205/405/406/306 engines as well and seems pretty much to be the standard spring valve as afar as i can tell

What is wrong with the engine code you quote in the topic title, XU10J2?

The n/a 2.0l 8v engine uses a different spring to the XU10J2TE.

My local dealers sewed the seed of doubt, started to talk chassis numbers and generally instilled zero confidence so I thought I'd make doubly sure on here!!

Looks as though there's nowt much to worry about in this particular case then...No wait...

So actually, it could well be an old wives tale after all!

Balls.

Not according to Servicebox it doesn't

On 205's there are 2 springs listed

0952 50 - (XU5J, XU9J1 engine codes)

0952 54 - (XU5JA, XU9JA, XU9JAZ engine codes)

so if you had one of the earlier engines codes then i guess there is a difference in upgrading to the other type which seems to be common across the whole 8v range

So that's definitely it sorted then.

So, if all I'm told is correct then the standard valve springs, 54mm long, are perfectly capable of handling pipers group A cam at well over 7500rpm! Kind of makes a mockery of the aftermarket upgrade springs...though I'm told they work fine, I still have my doubts...the whole standard valvetrain is so overweight it's bordering on Victorian!

I must get a handle on the calculations for valves and springs, it's a whole heap better than relying on old wives tales. Thanks for the detailed details M@tt, much appreciated. What is this Servicebox you speak of? Are mere mortals like myself able to jump on that waggon?

Yep, I see it - They are all the same springs.

Now all I have to do is decide what to think about these results...

Wierd, when I looked earlier I had two numbers (0952 54 & 0952 A6 iirc) but now there is just the one.

Looking at your numbers above though the 1.6 & 1.9 engines use the same spring as the XU10 anyway; 0952 54

That's not my recollection. The Grp A cam when used with standard springs runs perilously close to coil bind at full lift, and the reason why double springs were available. You need to verify the measurements yourself and not just rely on urban myths!
