1.9 Gti Gearbox.

i have a 1.9 gti gearbox on my mi just now, sometimes its a pain to get in 1st and second . was considering a 1.6 for quicker acceleration and add a quickshift kit to it. anyone got tis and how good is it. ?

1.6 box usually results in huge amounts of wheelspin if your not the best driver, personally, get your self a Xsara VTS gearbox, much better suited to the mi/gti6 engines (from personal experience)

Are all your linkages & pivots in good condition & tight?

 

If a 1.6 box causes loads of wheelspin then surely the VTS / Mi box will be worse because they have a lower first gear!!

 

It'll it straight on but you need to swap a selector arm across from the 205 box onto a VTS one so it works in the 205.

linkages are fine, they where all replaced with upgraded parts. , just the gearbox feels really notchy when trying to select 1st and 2nd when pulling away its fine after that.

Is the subframe pivot tight, gearbox oil level correct & have you got a quickshift fitted?

 

These are often the cause of selection difficulty imo & easy to fix with a 13mm socket & spanner.

ill check the pivot, its just a standard 1.9 gearbox on it , say i am stopped at the lights. i sometimes have to really give it push forward to select first gear . will check gearbox oil also.

have you tried adjusting the cable? this can help irradicate the problem, it's also free and quick!

Be1 (lockout collar & reverse next to first) or Be3 (reverse behind fifth) gearbox?

 

Be1 clutch release mechs are poor (not direct enough, too many pivots) which can make gear selection difficult.

be3 gearbox. took the car for a wee drive tonight, seems fine once warm slips in the gears easier. my battery light is slowing coming up on the dash when i use the heaters now. alt or battery replacement next. ?

If it's coming on very dimly that's fairly normal even with 70a alternators imo but if its glowing brightly the alternator needs replacing.
