Problems Sourcing Inserts For Pts Coilovers

Recommended Posts

rallysteve

As some of you might know I have thought about this for a while for my project. I have a pair of tarmac bilstein inserts in good condition and a set of fixed height bodies which take standard springs and top mounts. I have also got some adjustable height bodies, springs and things. I wanted to use the inserts I have in these adjustable PTS bodies, but the thread at the top is designed for the standard top mount and spring platform. This means the thread isnt even long enough to poke through the top of the upper spring retainer on the PTS set up, let alone through a top mount bearing. So i thought i would treat myself to a pair of long top spindle inserts for christmas, however after talking to Nick at Shenpar and Special Tuning UK it apears there arnt any left for sale, however Special tuning said that they would shortly be selling a conversion kit so short spindle shocks can be used with PTS rose jointed top mount. Presumably it is like this AB Motorsport one:

I am trying to work out if this will solve my problem as to needing new inserts at all not, failing that does anyone else know anywhere else i can get them, i tired Skip Brown today but nobody was there to answer the phone.

Many Thanks

Steve

I believe with most inserts of this type you can get the piston turned down to effectively lengthen the spindle, have heard of this being one quite a bit on here.

I rebuild my own, it's a bit of a fiddle but you can see in the image that I used a refillable valve

The only thing inside a bilstein insert that dictates it's stroke is the spacer inside. the piston rods are the same length. You can also go down the route of using escort inserts, tho the damper rates aren't quite right. Either way so long as you don't have any damage you can get the old ones rebuilt. Bilstein UK have a good reputation, they can alter valving and stroke to suit,
