Recommended Posts

hi do all mi16 engines sound rough. car has had a full service and new parts before the conversion, my cousin said his 1.6 gti was the same, its just the nature of the engine. ?

Your cousins car clearly needed the head re-shimming, the injectors make a loud 'tick' noise but that should be it really. What exhaust manifold is it running? as the standard items are prone to cracking right in the centre where access with a welder isnt possible which can often be mistaken for engine noise. How long has the engine been run for, has it been sat without oil for a long time?? They do take a while to fill up so often tap for a few minutes. What grade oil was used for the oil change as this could have an effect? If the above are ruled out then it seems you have a few duff followers which isnt uncommon.

think it is the injectors. as the car has had nearly £700 spent on the engine alone before fitting. has had a list

timing belt

alt belt

ignition ht leads

clutch cable

throttle cable

new fuel hose

ignition coil - ignition module

water junction (rear of block) and water pump

clutch

fuel-oil filter

dizzy cap

rocker cover gasket - drive shaft oil seals-camshaft oil seal

water temp sensor

used air flow meter - new crankshaft position sensor

also rear discs and rear pads and full gti-6 front brake setup.

has the standard manifold with a modified downpipe ,

not sure how long the engine was lying but it cost me nothing anyway , as i swapped my motocrosser for it. (which was knackerd) car runs great and always starts. the boy recommended i get the inectors chemically cleaned .. do you think it might be that .

i got mine cleaned and serviced by a guy on here called madprofessor he did a great job do a search. my friend had a stethoscope the same as what drs use and he put it on the injectors to find which one was ticking. I had a cracked manifold and that made a ticking noise.

£5 per injector cleaned or £10 per injector cleaned stripped and serviced.

Injectors aren't usually that noisey imo & virtually everying thing listed above are general service parts, nothing internal on the engine.

How loud is it & does it vary with engine temp or revs?

Has the engine been apart or rebuilt & what milage has it covered?

Standard Mi exhaust manifolds are also prone to cracking on the collector but need either a reangling plate for the exhaust manfiold or a modified exhaust manifold & downpipe.

Graham.

not sure on the mileage for the mi engine, got told it was supposedly 80,000 like the rest have. its the same noise when hot or cold, so its probably fine. all sensors work on the engine , water temp and oil pressure never changes. only thing that i hate is the way the petrol gauge goes down lol.

Miles

Try using a stick or tube on the injectors to see if they are all making around the same noise, other end near your ear.

Other than that the head might need some new lifters

My Mi is quite but if it's been sitting the oil drains from the tappets under pressure from the cams but once the car has been going 20mins approx it's back to being perfect.
