Gti6 Cooling Issues

Recommended Posts

stef205

I have a cooling issue with my gti6 engined 205, It has been plumbed in as the same as spiky has on his progress thread. Now I have run the car up and it pushes water out the header tank, i have tryied running with out a thermostat and also with one in with a little hole drilled in it. I presume this is air causing this. I have unscrewed the bleed screws from both the thermostat housing and the heater matrix, i get water run freely out the thermostat housing bleed hole but the heater matrix it seems to come out in bit and drabs not very much, Along with this the temp gauge always shows cold doesnt even reach the second white line on the dash. When the engine was fitted it had a new water pump. I have earthed the gauge out and it reads hot so i presume the gauge works. The radiator had a new fan switch and the fan seems to run constant once on. I am going to do a compression test tomorrow. If some one could please try and point me in the right direction thanks

How have you routed the small diameter hose from the header tank outlet to the top left radiator point?

No idea on how that ones been done, but the general rule of thumb is connect it like the std 8v 205, just T into the water Dist pipe to heater matrix and one take off from the stat housing to the matrix, with it done that way it will work and bleeding shouldn;t even be required

When mine kept pushing the coolant out it was the headgasket. I've got the same setup as spiky aswell pretty much.

It may not be, but bear it in mind. I thought my first 6 engine was sound when I put in it, obviously not.

Mine does this but only if you rev it up. Once the stat has opened it is fine. I would suspect maybe your heater matrix is causing the bypass circuit to be to restrictive. Try joining the two heater hoses together to allow a full flow. I also think the T pipe on the bottom of the coolant tank maybe causes the return to fill up the coolant tank and push the air in the tank into the top of the rad. I also found that if I took off the small pipe from the top of rad to the tank and blocked both ends up. It would stop it happening but probably not the right cure.

Interested to know if you cure it.

Neil.

Thanks for all the reply's, i went to change the rear water distributor block on the back to one that was simular to the standard fit to the 1.9gti engine but as i bolted it to the block it split and cracked, so i took the alloy distributor block to the machining shop and they are going to add a outlet to the block. This way not only should it not crack but i will be able to plumb the engine back to like with the original engine.

No need to do that at all, if anything it makes the water pipes run too close to the exhaust manifold which is why pug used the metal one running down the back and that replaces the pipe from the header tank to that bit, I always use the 'T' piece as it makes a reliable way of routing the pipes

You could alternatively run two steel water pipes

My exhaust manifold has been wrapped in that heat resistance bandage or what ever its called, and i have some heat resistant tape for the hoses in case i need it.
